Score! The 'I Got an Awesome Turbo/PCE Deal!' Thread
« on: May 07, 2008, 11:22:39 AM »
In this thread, you can talk about any awesome deals you found and participated in for Turbo or PC Engine games.

The reason I started this is because my copy of Last Alert (U.S. Version) came today. It cost only $40 and came with the manual and case. A good deal, considering it usually goes for about $100. My copy had a cracked case and the last page of the manual was caught one of the tabs, but I think that it was just my copy. I found this on ebay of all places. The seller was ultimate_video_game_connection, and I highly recommend her!

P.S. If YOU are also looking for a copy of Last Alert, she still has two left for only $40 each!

Wha?!??! $100 for Last Alert? Is this true? If so, I've been out of the loop. I got my copy for $35 within the past year.

No it doesn't.

People trying to sell games on ebay for outrageous prices != people buying games on ebay for outrageous prices.

Besides the one you bought, the last copy on ebay sold for around $20: http://cgi.ebay.com/Turbo-Grafx-Duo-Last-alert_W0QQitemZ140228703822QQihZ004QQcategoryZ62053QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Last Alert is an awesome game (although it's embarassingly easy and about a tenth as fun as shock troopers) but it's not even CLOSE to worth $100, no way.  My copy came in a lot of 7 games which I bought for about $80 shipped.  Minty case and manual, too :)

I'm glad you're happy about your purchase, but you might want to educate yourself a bit about the actual value of these games.  Ebay is a ripoff for Turbo games like no other system.  If people continue to buy games at inflated prices it will only (further) damage the market.

I got my last alert w/ case and manual for $15. If you must use ebay, use the 'completed listings' button. It's still not great, but it's better than those god awful ebay stores with the insane Buy it Now prices.

It's ok to pay more, if it's something you really want, but it's always a good idea to figure out how much stuff is worth. For comparison, you could afford about fifteen games or so paying that price for the $600 total I paid for about *ninety* games, including a lot of actually rare stuff like Dungeon Explorer II

Just ask on the chat bar on the front page. I'm pretty new here, but the folks on these boards are a pretty friendly and helpful bunch, even if they are obsessive and crazy.

Oh, wait. I'm obsessive and crazy. THATS why I fit in  :-k

I thought this thread was a joke when I first saw it.
In case it's not, I'd like to announce that I have loose copies of Super Star Soldier and Dungeon Explorer hucards for sale at a mere $85 and $50, respectively.

Anyway, there are only about a dozen U.S. games that anyone should ever pay more than $35 for:

Beyond Shadowgate
Bonk 3 CD
Bonk 3 hucard
Cotton (maybe)
Dragon Slayer (on a bad day)
Dungeon Explorer 2
Dynastic Hero
Exile 2
Godzilla
Magical Chase
Might and Magic 3
Super Air Zonk
Sydmead's Terraforming
Ys 3 (recently inflated)

Some of the later (good) Turbochips like Neutopia 2 and Hero Tonma will also cost more than $35 if you're looking for a complete copy.

A good price gauge to determine the real value of an item on ebay is to find the most expensive Buy It Now listing and divide by four...then wait six months for a real auction to come along.

Well, I'm a sucker for Buy It Now, so that explains it. ](*,)

The reason I posted this here, was because I allow all games, American or Japanese, to be posted here. Even runin posts American games in his thread and it's here. If you find Dracula X for $5, post it (and please, tell us where you found it. ).

This is basically a place to brag about the awesome deal you got (or at least think you got) on a game.

Some of my better scores:

Magical Chase, US version, complete, $165
Terra Cresta II, JP version, new/sealed, $70
Beyond Shadowgate, US version, complete, $75 (got the game sans manual for $70, picked the manual up later for $5)
SuperGrafx console, JP version, $60
Terraforming, US version, complete, $45
RAU-30 SuperGrafx CD-ROM^2 adapter, JP version, new/sealed, $20 (thanks HK seller who doesn't know English!)
Samurai Ghost, US version, complete, $9 (got the cart loose for $9, got the manual later for free)

And then basically all the multitudes of games I bought new/sealed from TZD over the years for $10-$30, including Bonk 3 back in '95.

I just got a Turbografx CD only with the base and case from ebay.  The seller listed it with a buy it now price of $199.  I made an offer of $150 which I think was still to high and he accepted.  I have seen a turbo grafx cd system with a turbo grafx go on ebay for around $130.
Turbo fan since 1991 after owning my first system.

2008:  $25 Turbo Express
2007:  $100 for a TG16, CD player, U.S. 3.0 card and some accessories.  $20 for Dungeon Explorer 2--A domestic seller listed it BIN without a picture.  I took at chance and got the US version.  $40 sealed Cotton.  Used Ys 3, Dragon Slayer and Exile 2 for $10 each.
2006:  $70 for U.S. Terraforming with Psychic Storm, Super Darius and Final Soldier
2005:  $40 Might and Magic 3, $69 Sylphia
1997:  $15 Super Air Zonk from Game Dude

Some of my better scores:
Magical Chase, US version, complete, $165

RAU-30 SuperGrafx CD-ROM^2 adapter, JP version, new/sealed, $20 (thanks HK seller who doesn't know English!)
Pretty awesome deal on Magical Chase.  BTW, how rare are those RAU Adapters?  The prices seem to vary quite a bit.  I got a dirty used one for $10.

Well, I'm a sucker for Buy It Now, so that explains it. ](*,)
Hey, sorry about my harsh "thought this was a joke" comment earlier. At forty bucks, you didn't make too big a mistake and Last Alert is a damn fun game.  I just played though it over the winter and had a good time.  It's easy, but there are a ton a of stages.

I would say "uncommon." There are fewer of them out there than SuperGrafxes which aren't incredibly plentiful to begin with. They aren't very highly sought after items however, since most people with SuperGrafxes tend to want the Super CD-ROM^2 drive instead of the big bulky dock.

That said, you're absolutely right about the prices being all over the place... I've seen them sold for $100+, which is just ludicrous. I couldn't pay more than $20 for a used one, myself. That said, buying a brand new/sealed one for $20 still felt pretty good. Gotta love those "30RAU FOR PC COMPUTER"s

I bought my Turbo Express for $3 at a rummage sale.

I win this thread.

(Although that was like 8 years ago, back when you could still do that sort of thing.  *sigh*)

My score was:

* CoreGrafx II
* SCD-ROM2 unit
* ACD Card Duo
and about 35~40 games, about half of them loose HuCards, but ones more valuable were complete with manual & case, including:
- Nexzr Special
- Strider Hiryu
- Parasol Stars

For about less than US$100, shipped.  The unit wasn't @@LOOK OMG MIB condition, but hell, it worked fine.

That was when I was living in Japan -- Man, Yahoo Japan Auction rules.  There's no way in hell I'm gonna find a deal like that outside of Japan (even though that was a deal in itself in Japan).

Too bad 99% of the people on Yahoo JP auctions aren't willing to ship their goods outside Japan, cause if they did, it'd totally drive a lot of the prices (especially ebay prices) down with it.

Nat is right. I have sold a new RAU-30 SuperGrafx CD-ROM^2 adapter for $125 6 years ago via Ebay auction. I was asking for $25 only.  I can't imagine myself using The Super Grafx + RAU30 adapter + Super CD rom unit to play CD games.

My score over the years:

Dracula X SCD + Fighting Street CD $60
Super Grafx console no AC $35
Ys I & II US Turbo CD complete $1 (yes, $1.09 with tax)
R-Type Complete SCD $5
1941 SG complete $60
