Magical Chase Fan Edition?
« on: May 10, 2008, 04:03:33 AM »
I was over on Play-Asia.Com looking at PC-Engine games when i seen they had a used copy of Magical Chase for sale labeled "Fan Edition".

Are there two different versions of this game? and if so what are the differences? Not that am in the the market for Magical Chase at the moment(Too pricey for me)but i was just curious being a newcomer to the PCE and such.

Thanks for any info on this everyone. :D

The Japanese game was released twice.  The original print comes in a standard "old style" HuCard jewel case.  Later it was rereleased with the PC Engine Fan Magazine.  This version came in the "new style" HuCard case.  The actual games and manuals are 100% identical though, its only the cases that are different.  The PCE Fan Edition is probably a bit rarer, but they are both priced the same usually.

The US Magical Chase though has quite a few differences, and is graphically superior to both Japanese versions.  I'll let someone else point these out though.

The Japanese version (both of them) of this game is really a big, giant rip-off. You end up paying $120-$140 for a version of the game that is markably inferior to the US counterpart. If you have a good eye and a little patience you can pick up the US version of the game for as little as $25 more.

On a game like Magical Chase, when you're going to be spending over $100 either way, it's definitely worth your while to spring for the slightly more costly US release.

Sorry to pull this out of it's grave.  But I find this interesting that only 2 years ago the US version of Magical Chase was "only a bit more" haha.  I guess now the JP version is a steal eh?

Well that's an understatement, heh.

How long ago was Dean trying to sell his sealed US Magical Chase for $600? I'm betting a loose +manual version was probably under $150 back then.

-Ripple's sprite was re-drawn for the US version, looks better.
-Lots of graphical changes in the first stage ().

There may be other differences but those are the only ones I'm aware of.

Correct, I picked up a US Magical Chase that was complete in box for around $165 around the time I posted that message.

Certain individuals that have since appeared on the scene decided that this US stuff is actually a lot rarer than it really is, hence the sudden price spike in a lot of the "rare" US games. It's disgusting, if you ask me.

No biggie. I would say the differences are trivial, and given the price difference between the two, I certainly wouldn't go with the US version for the minor graphical changes.

Which is why most of my library (including MC) consists of the 'cheaper' PCE versions.

Not quite true, the first level of the game is almost completely redrawn in the US version. Beyond that though, yeah, the differences are minor.

You can find a cached version of Black Tiger's comparison piece here.

I've gone back and looked at tons of REALLY old threads since I started posting here and it's price has been talked about tons of times about how expensive it was.  From what I've been able to gather it's been rising over the years, it's no recent trend.  Sure there is a super spike in the price currently but people have been complaining about it's price for years here.

Example:  Here is one in 2005...

Anyway, I know MC always fetches $250+ and Bonk 3 HuCard is almost always $100-$150+ and I'm afraid I just can't swing that right now...as much as I'd like to, and I hate to lowball you.

Good luck!

and in response he says:

For a loose MC.... :)

I'm looking around $600 for the Magical Chase.  This is as pristine as you can get.  Fresh-out-of-a-case fresh (no, there is no case of these in my living room!)

So D-Lite is saying even back then it was $250 for a loosie?  Yes, this MC he is selling for $600 was sealed but you get the point I think. Here is the thread I was quoting and I don't see anyone arguing with the prices listed all the way back in 2005.
