Mysterious Song Double Disc Poll

Since we're toying with the idea of making Mysterious Song a double-disc set (game disc + OST), this has become something of a debate. So, it's open to public opinion. This isn't a decision that needs to be made right now, but obviously will need to be made come pressing time. So, vote away.

My vote's for the fatty, though I could go either way (that's what she said).  I've yet to break a slim style double disc case, so I'm not too concerned about the durability; what does worry me is having room for the manual, as I don't think that the slim cases allow as much room under the little pegs.  Of course, that point is entirely moot if you're planning on a simple single fold insert.  As an added bonus, the fat double case would leave plenty of room for a small fold out map/poster like Beyond Shadowgate, Dragon Slayer, etc.

Well, the game comes with an 8 page manual (well, 6 pages plus front and back cover). Basically, 2 pieces of paper stapled together. It would likely fit into a single case but I'm not 100% sure on that one. Equuskia was toying with the idea of a poster though...that'd be impossible to do in a single-sized case. It's hard enough to include in a normal single-disc case when you've got a manual as well.

Double disc Dreamcast releases like Skies of Arcadia or Phantasy Star Online have a 32-pg (plus covers) manual in a single-width case width without any problems.  (Though if a poster was to be included, that'd probably be pushing it for single-width case.)

And I dunno if I'd say the slim double case is any more fragile than a regular single disc case.  I mean, if you were gonna drop them all the time because you're a klutz, the double case would just as easily crack as the single case.  But in either case, they're pretty easy to replace since they're standard CD jewel cases -- they're not like some proprietary pain-in-the-ass-cases-to-replace cases like that of the Sega CD or HuCard's.

Okay, lobbying done for the single-width case.

I disagree-- I think it's the flimsy plastic tray inside the single-width double cases that breaks easily. I don't know if I own a single one that isn't broken, and I'm not exactly clumsy.

I vote for the big double case.

I voted Double disc case! If it is going to include an ost and or poster, I think a double case would be more convenient. I'm buying a copy either way though!

What is going to be in the manual, Rover? Will it be just a basic 'how to play,' or will it have other stuff like character profiles, a spell and equipment list, and neat things like that? I hope for the latter, that would be awesome! My opinion is that if you are going to make it a deluxe release, with an OST disc and a poster, you might as well make a good manual. Ooh, ooh! What's the cover art going to look like?

Hrm...we could expand the manual I reckon. Equipment and spell lists would be kinda nifty. There's a character page already...well, two character pages really:



It's not a 100% final design but this is basically how it will look. Not sure yet whether it will be outlined like this, or in full color.

We've not yet decided on cover art. Black Tiger and Equuskia are the ones who're in charge of all the inserts, and that includes cover art.

I can't believe so many people are voting on double disc!  All of my double disc manual's, fit in a single disc, & I have most games ever released.  There's only a frew exceptions, I think one of those is Sim Earth, & I'm sure there's a few others.  Man, now I'm gonna have to buy another slim disc case, & transfer it all.  I'll live, but, it still sucks.  I just hate double discs soooo much.  If I didn't switch out all my double discs(not to mention all my Sega CD, Saturn, & PS1 cases), I'd be completely out of room, thanks to my ridiculous collection.  Sorry to bitch n moan, just really wanna express my disgust for double cases

Maybe if there is enough demand for a "reprint", we can make the new ones in a single case and then the old double case ones will be ultra rare!

There's an old Aesop's fable that carries the message "if you try to please everyone, you'll lose your ass". Therefore, we will be using the majority vote in this. This kind of decision is best handled in a democratic method.

Tangent 1: Holy crap, the manual looks nice. You folks rock!

Tangent 2: The best solution for fat manuals, IMO, are the "slightly larger than normal" jewel cases that house a handful of PCE games. They are specially designed for fat manuals, proving to be a far superior solution to fatty double-disc jewel cases (I've never been a fan of them -- you can never fit them on slotted CD storage racks!).
