NEC old computer cd-rom works with TG-CD interface
« on: May 13, 2008, 11:33:54 AM »
Edit: This was solved but I figured I'd leave it up for all those like myself who weren't aware of this compatibility.

A friend of mine came across this white NEC drive that is identical to a black US Turbo CD add on. Has anyone ever seen these before? Any differences from the regular black unit? US or Japanese? I've never seen a white unit like this before so I was curious.

Thanks for any info!

Looks like any other old NEC CDROM that went with their old computers.

It is. The PCE/TG16 cd drive is the same as the ones for some of their older computers. They can be swaped, ect with no issues. It was  a nice standard for back then, you have to admit.

So this would be 100% compatible with the TG-CD interface? That's great!  I'm sure he'll be happy to hear it. Thanks for the help guys.

This is the NEC PC-88 series CD-Rom player. This is not a protopye and it fits perfectly in the interface unit. A friend of mine do own such a computer but I can't remember wether it's pce compatible or not (as far as I can remember, it is but I'm not 100% sure).

i heavily doubt that, since the PC-88 and PC Engine do not have a lot of similarities when it comes to hardware comparison. altough that you can swap the cd-roms is nice to hear :)

Yes, but both the pc engine and the PC-88's CD-Rom players are just CD-Rom players. The hardware needed to process all the datas are in the pc engine itself or in the PC-88 ;)

It wasnt just for PC-88. We got them in America. They came with the  BFU-35 buffer units as part of non-multimedia upgrades for old  286-386 Nec based computers.
