Why do people like Manual transmissions so much? I know how to drive with them, but I don't like to, just because they're a nuissance.

Why don't you use a Action Replay every time you play a video game? I find finite lives to be a nuisance.

I'd rather just not even drive that drive a car with an automatic. I don't want connivence features in a car that make me do less. I drive to drive. If I'm not going to be absorbed into the driving experience, I might as well walk.

In addition to sucking all the fun out of driving, they also suck all the power, speed, and fuel out of a car.

Now, this is coming from me, a person who likes BMW M3s, Miatas, GTIs, etc. If your favorite car is a Rolls Royce, then obviously anything but an auto is stupid. However if your favorite car is a Rolls Royce than I don't see why you don't just stay at home on the couch...there isn't much difference.

I like 'em because they're cheaper, more efficient, and allow for easy engine braking.  Drive one for a while and shifting will become second nature and no longer a nuisance.  That is assuming that you're not a pirate with a peg leg and a hook hand; if you are, maybe the parrot would help.

I used to think the same way, but there's a few cars that I'd accept with an automatic: namely those with true manual gear selection that will not shift until told to do so.  Many AMG offerings would be horrible with a stick, as the only clutch that could withstand their massive torque and remain reliable would be too stiff to be fun (she's never said that).  I also like some sequential transmissions; the one from vee dub is buttery smooth and shifts far quicker than I ever could, but BMW's is a piece of shift (ha-ha).

On paper this is true. Acceleration times and IM240/EPA tests indicate similar, if not better acceleration and MPG with todays autos. Its kind of misleading though. There is a lot more to the idea of "performance" than the simple hole shot, and those autos that beat the manuals in MPG (the current Civic, for example) are programmed specifically to pass that test, not to actually get better MPG in the real world.

That being said, the only auto I would consider in a car I would actually buy would be Borg Warner's DSG found in most VW/Audi sport models these days. Its the only one that will actually let you downshift when you want to. In something like a Fit, the f*cker won't go into 2nd until its going about 10mph, which would make high speed cornering impossible. In most cars the sequential shift option is just something for idiots to f*ck with while they are driving. It won't put you into the proper gear for a corner exit during braking like a DSG or full manual would. Safety isn't the only reasons motorcycles never have an auto trans.

Still, as great as the DSG is, I'd take the standard shifter on a new GTI or A4 since I almost shat myself after seeing a cutaway of a DSG. Its NASA-grade complexity inside! Also, buttons are no fun. Also, $900 cheaper.

And as has been said, manuals are a dying breed. In the coming years they will be no longer availible because putting that much control into the hands of the driver makes fuel economy a wild card. By the time I'm 50 there won't be any fully manual transmissions or convertible tops, and GPS trackers will be installed in every new car by law.

These are the halcyon days...live it up.

it is? Seemed like EVERYONE in Japan and Europe had manuals, at least when I was there.

Agree with both points about manual/standard.  I'd get an auto for 90% of the cars out there (so much for my truck being a manual  8-[).  I simply don't care too much for shifting manually for basic transportation-type cars.

But for a "driver's car", there's no other way than a standard.  It reminds me of an RX7 I recently saw with an auto tranny in it.  Why the hell would you buy an RX7 with an auto transmission?

You can actually buy kei cars in the US now...well, sort of. ...The Honda Fit (decended from the classic Honda City) is sold in the US with a "huge" 1.5 liter.


Fit isn't quite the kei-car -- it always had a 1.x liter engine, which would've been way too big for the kei-car class in the first place.  The Fit is a step-up from the Honda Life, which is a true kei car -- a touch smaller in dimesions, with the kei-car compliant tiny engine. 


And talking about mileage, I recall certain models of metros were listed at an EPA 49~59 mpg in the early-mid 90's, then cars obtaining such mileage were never heard of again until the hybrids came in.  Well, shit, if they can import such fuel efficient cars back then, why not now?  No gasoline cars here these days (and even majority of hybrids) get anywhere near that mileage these days.

That's not quite as good as mileage as I hoped, but still way better than I get now.  It'd be fun to ride on the sunny days, though it'd take forever to save enough gas to offset the initial cost, so I'm probably better off saving my pennies and dreaming.


The gay little 49cc scooters get like 110~120 mpg. :D (Gay as it may be, I wouldn't mind owning one if I were back in California or something.)

That's an easy one to answer: nobody wanted one then and nobody wants one now.  A '92 Geo Metro with a manual tranny was rated at 46 mpg city and 50 mpg highway, but the EPA estimates show it down to 38/45 mpg if tested under current rules; opting for an auto. dropped mileage down to 31/35 mpg (new rules).  As you can see, real world mileage wasn't that great when compared to a current compact car, especially considering the nose dive that its mileage would take if it were updated to pass current emissions and safety requirements.  Compare that old pile to a Toyota Yaris: the Yaris gets 29/36 mpg (1 mpg less for slushboxes), yet it's 600lbs heavier, a foot and a half longer, a bit taller and wider, and twice as powerful.  Truthfully, today's compacts are more efficient than ever and would likely surpass the unrealistic mileage estimates of 80's shit boxes, if it  weren't for the power and creature comforts that most buyers demand (as well as safety and emissions equipment).  Christ on a cracker; I sound like a car salesman, except I'm not lying.  Would anyone like to buy this car?  It's a real beaut and was only driven by a little old lady to church on Sundays.  :wink:

I like them because it feels like I am in far more control over the car.  It helps keep you a bit more alert as to what is going on around you.  Let's not forget the better gas mileage and other fun benefits.  I freak out when I drive an automatic because they creep forward unless I put my foot on the brake.  One time when I had to get a rental car, I could not figure out how to turn the damn thing on.  Turns out you have to put your foot on the brake as you turn the ignition.  Silly me, and I even used to own a car with an automatic transmission (don't make me post pics!) 


Regardless of what you prefer, it is definitely recommended to learn how to drive a manual transmission.  You never know when a situation might arise when you will be required to drive a car that is manual!

I hate using manual transmission in driving games!

haha…… its ok man i did the same damn thing on an auto rental i got in Nove Scotia a few years back, all i drive is a standard :D
I just love the standard drive… and yes it is a cheaper option when you buy but if you wear it out you will be dropping another grand at least for it to be replaced. My old 93 saturn plum colored coupe had a whopping 420,000 KM (whatever that is in miles to my U.S brothers) and at that millage i finally burnt out my first clutch on it!!!, it just got me home that day, had only the first and second gear, rpm's very screaming!!!!:lol:

here is mine… the right colour and the right model… 69 Corvette and it is for sale For the low, low price of .... 33k :shock:

i love Corvette's, the newer models especially but they are so far out of my reach… but one day…one day!!!! my just wife hates them, could be a problem :roll:
