Best of the final games
« on: May 14, 2008, 11:34:52 PM »
1996 saw a total of 6 games released for the now ancient PC Engine, and 1997 had 2. This makes it the second oldest console to receive new releases (the oldest: the Atari 2600, which had new first party games as late as 1990, it's 13th year)

Dead of the brain really can't be considered an official release, but it's included for completeness.

Madou Monogatari, one of my favorite games ever.

Bazaru and Puyo 2 are very good.  Steam Hearts is okay.  I haven't played the others yet.

Definitely Bazaaru de Gozaaru no Geemu de Gozaaru! I haven't played all of the other games but I can't imagine anyone of them to be better than O-Saru! I've been stuck in the last desert level for ages though.

I wonder which one Tatsujin will pick.  :-k

The heady mix of a shooter and boobies made Steam Heart's awfully tempting, but I had to vote for Madou Monogatari.  The PCE's swan song was pretty sweet; these titles are all solid for the most part, though I haven't played all of 'em.

Has anyone played both PCE and PC-FX Tekipaki?  Do they share any common elements beyond the title and characters?

Dead of the brain really can't be considered an official release, but it's included for completeness.

What's unofficial about it, other than it didn't come out until '99?  If anything, Motteke Tamago is the one that shouldn't be listed.  :-k

It'd be interesting if you put the year of release next to each title- also you should add the two Mindrec physical releases.

Why in the world wouldn't you consider Dead of the Brain an official release? Wasn't it released by NEC Avenue? Maybe you mean to say that because the gap between DotB and the previous game is so long that it doesn't really mean that the system was "alive" that entire time. I can see the logic in that. DotB came completely out of the blue.

Also, the Neo Geo had its last real game in late 2004, and the system came out in '90 or '91. That makes it at least as long lived as the PC Engine. For a while there I was wondering of the DC would come along and topple the geezer Neo Geo, but it looks like official games may have finally stopped coming.

Anyway, I still haven't played Madou Monogatari, so with my limited knowledge of these games I'm voting Bazaaru de Gozaaru no Geemu de Gozaaru. I love it.

Well the thing is that if you consider the life span of the system to extend to homebrews then there is no end. Last Hope is not the last Neo Geo game, SamShow 5 Special was. And the 2600 is most certainly dead as hell despite homebrew carts coming out for it all the time.

Sure there's an end.  There's two homebrews past 95 that were physically released to this date.  End.

This thread is about PCE.

So should we list Space Fantasy Zone since it finally physically existed this year? And if that Frozen Utopia thing came out tomorrow, would that mean the PCE lasted 20 years? If I put Toungeman's Logic on a flash card does it now physically exist, and does it become a real game that extends the "life" of the system?

This stuff is all so grey area. Its much easier to just call it at the end of official releases.

I think the Neo Geo beats out the PC Engine for 2nd place, but this timeline puts the PCE in close 3rd. I think, anyway. Someone want to double check the math?

Good point as far as Space Fantasy Zone is concerned- I don't know.  It isn't a homebrew though as it was programmed by NEC Avenue.  The current duplication of it is the question - also the question arises again on whether or not it was released in the past along with a pc-engine fan 'zine as reported.

Tongueman's Logic shouldn't count as it wasn't "physically released"- what people put on their flash cards is their own business.
