Need some advice on Neo Geo
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:56:07 AM »
My crazy luck continues. An old friend I had not seen in some time stopped by and traded me a Neo Geo AES system over the weekend. Add that to a lucky score on ebay, and I find myself the proud owner of a very nice AES console and about twelve games for $200 (wiping out the last of the stimulus check, but who cares?)

So, I've got a bunch of the common stuff (Magician Lord, Cyberball 2020, Nam 75, Riding Hero, Super Spy, Alpha Mission 2, Ninja Combat, Ghost Pilots, Blue's Journey, Super Sidekicks 2, and something else I can't remember). So I'm REALLY happy right? Never thought I'd own one of these things.

Then, the NEXT DAY after getting the console, my cousin Kevin calls and says (I shit you not): "Hey, I just found this Metal Slug 3 Neo Geo cart in the trash. You want it?"

Yeah. METAL SLUG 3 in the damned TRASH in 2008! How about that? It's this website. It's gotta be. I registered here, and games started falling out of the sky on my head.

So, anyways, I know there are a few Neo Geo collectors over here. What are your recommendations on what to pick up next. I'm thinking Samurai Showdown II and Crossed Swords. What do you all like on the system?

Two of my personal favorites are King of the Monsters 1 and 2 (a bit less love for the sequel and its difficulty level).  Their relatively cheap and fun, just like meth whores.

Lets see some pictures of that Slug 3.  Was it just the cart?  That is such an absurdly great find, I can't even fathom how something like that would end up in the garbage.

Definately buy these:
Fatal Fury Special ($20)
Samurai Shodown/Spirits II ($20)
+1 on the King of the Monsters games

Consider buying these:
Samurai Spirits III ($60-ish)
Samurai Spirits IV ($150 -- the US version is pretty rare and commands a higher price FYI)
Sengoku 3 ($180, one of the best beat 'em ups ever made, fabulous fighting system)
Last Resort ($150 or under, one of the best R-Type clones ever, probably my favorite Neo shooter)
Aero Fighters 2 (not sure on the price but I think it's under $100)

Never buy:
Metal Slug 1 (costs $1000 minimum and you have to be an expert to spot a counterfeit)

Sell:
Riding Hero
Ghost Pilots
(both games are seriously TERRIBLE)

Theres a ton of fun fighting games in the $100-$300 range if you're into that sort of thing.  Some of my favorite fighters are KoF 98 and 2002, Art of Fighting 3, Matrimelee, Garou MOTW (under $400 for a JP copy), and probably others I'm forgetting.

Also consider selling all your stuff (or maybe just the Metal Slug 3 if it's complete) and buying a consolized MVS board, an MVS board and a supergun, or go all the way and get a cab with a nice low-res monitor.

Oh, and when you notice the horrible dot crawl (i.e. rainbow distortions in the graphics): there's nothing wrong with your system, it just has terrible composite output.

I like Shock Troopers 1st Squad (got that recently at a thrift store for $6 + tax).  Neo Turf Masters is also really good, but I nearly trip over all of the copies that are available for cheap everywhere.

On The Gweeeeeen

You win this thread, dude.  That's awesome to the 69th power.

On a semi-related note: has anyone here played Kabuki Clash?  It's moderately priced (for the Neo0, but is it worth a shit, especially when compared to the Arcade Card game?

They are completely different games.  I've not played the Neo version yet though.  Personally my favorite Neo game is Blazing Star, but the AES cart is only for the true nut-cases such as myself.

My personal faves on the Neo Geo:

Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Crossed Swords (this is a classic!)
Samurai Shodown 1, 2, and 4 (3 and 5 suck huge)
Just about any KOF (94 and 2001 kinda suck though)

Yeah...I like fighters. :D
