Turbo Duo price???
« on: June 06, 2008, 11:47:03 AM »
Hi I'm new to the site, have a friend that wants to sell me his Turbo Duo, he says it was only played once and has the original box and is mint, the only thing missing is the power supply (which I know I can get at radio shack) he wants $350 for the system. Be honest is that good or I'm getting screwed. Also he said it was the part of the first release if that makes a difference.

That's a pretty shitty deal IMO. You could probably score a loose TurboDuo in the $140-$180 range.

So then you have to ask yourself-- is having the box worth an additional $170-$210?

"Number of times" played is irrelevant-- the parts in these things that go bad with time go bad with no bearing on number of times used. You can get a brand new, never played, factory sealed TurboDuo with nonexistent audio right out of the box.

The price is too high even by ebay standards.  Don't bother with a boxed system, bid on a lot with a bunch of games.  If for some reason you really care about the box, talk your friend down.  If he's really your friend, he should sell it to you for $250.  If he's basing his $350 price off of the "buy it now" non-auction Duos that don't sell for months, tell him he's a moron.

If you do buy from your friend, make sure he allows you to test it first; especially considered it hasn't been played for a while because there's no power supply.  Get a CD game and play it for a couple hours.  Make sure you don't have any problems with the audio or anything else.  Being able to test the system and/or get your money back is the one main advantage of buying from your friend instead of ebay.

Here are the last five closed auctions for reference or bargaining leverage.  The ones with a ton of games tend to be a better deal.

$405:  Duo, "new" (boxed, no styrofoam or AC), tap, controllers, 16 sealed games.

Hi,
I think his price is touch to high for being a friend. I got mine from Criagslist for $75 boxed just needed a new laser. So if you want one just bide your time and one will come along.

+1 on it being overpriced.  I also doubt that it's only been used once; if that were true, how did the power supply go awol?  I blame a roving band of ninjas.

Yeah, stupid ninjas.  :x

Your friend should be willing to haggle with you. His original asking price was way over the top, especially for being a friend.

you should holler at D-Lite and see if he's still dealing in jazz like this:

http://www.multimods.com/tgsales.html

a bit back, i purchased this from him:

Quote
Region-Modded and S-Video-Modded PC Engine Duo-R w/Violet LED:  $310 shipped
A PC Engine Duo-R that has been region modded so you can play both US and Japanese HuCards (and of course CDs and SCDs) without the need for an external adapter.  System outputs beautifully colorful S-Video through my hand-built encoder. Excellent overall cosmetic shape (has been thoroughly cleaned as well).  Controller is fully functional original DuoR controller and is still quite white.  Comes with original AC adapter and new 12' S-Video/stereo cables.

and have been way, way beyond pleased.  now, compare what i got and what i paid to what your buddy's deal ;)

define: "friend"

don't even touch his duo (don't touch mine either =).  the only time $350 is worth it for a duo is if it's completely sealed with all the original pack-in software still inside and even then only if you are a hard-core turbo  fan.  there are so many great duos out there in excellent condition with the original power supply for pete's sake for much less.

the missing power adapter is really problematic for me.  i would want to original if possible.  as it is, if the software is included, $210 is the "friend" price and even that is assuming everything looks perfect.
