New Adventure Island

How do you guys feel about this game? Like it, hate it?

I was thinking about picking up a copy but I read that its just re-hash of Super Adventure Island for the Super Nintendo. Is this true?

Completely untrue.

Its awesome because its a rehash of Wonderboy/Adventure Island.

I'm not a huge fan of Super Adventure Island because of how much they changed the game.

It's an OK game at best.  I still need the manual for it, though (I'd be happy to trade the cardboard box and plastic tray).

I like Super Adventure Island better since I feel it controls better, is all around more interesting and has (by far) better music.

Like Black Tiger said, completely untrue.

Super Adventure Island shares very little in common with NAI other than name and hero.

New Adventure Island is much more a remake or "remix" of the game Wonderboy. Many of the same level cues are present, although the graphics have been hugely improved and many new things added.

Since I'm a big fan of the original Wonderboy and Wonderboy series in general, I'm a big fan of New Adventure Island. Unlike Joe, I feel NAI is the better game (perhaps because I'm partial to the original Wonderboy), although I'll admit Super Adventure Island has the better soundtrack.

New Adventure Island is a completely different game than Adventure Island/Wonder Boy.  It's more like a sequel.  However it is its own entity, not a remake.

Most important of all, NAI has cutting edge mood altering Mode 7 effects at the beginning of each stage.

For me, the fist shaking intro is what makes it worth owning.

It's my favorite Adventure Island game (which is one of my favorite series) and it's --easily -- my favorite TurboGrafx game.  Everything about it is sublime: the graphics, the music, the level design, and the atmosphere.  With one exception (Cadash), it's the only TG game I can beat again and again without ever getting bored.  I enjoy it so much that I've spent hours mapping out all the secrets just for fun.

And, best of all, between every world, Master Higgens performs a dance number with animal friends.  AWESOME.

My only criticism is that the bosses are really, really easy (except for -- IIRC -- the level 5 boss who took a few tries before I figured out his pattern), and it takes awhile until the difficulty starts picking up (maybe around world 3 or so).  However, the levels start getting pretty tricky towards the end, especially the last world, but ESPECIALLY the second to last level.
I'm not sorry about this, as I'm not sorry about ANY attack by the goverrats.

Hahaha, same here actually! You know I didn't even know that scene existed until I saw the POWER UP promo video you sent me. I swear that promo makes Turbo games look so awesome, even the crappiest ones like Falcon!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

After seeing Falcon and Gunboat in that promo, I figured that they must've used footage from PC versions(looked way better than I remembered). But it still intrigued me enough to fire them up again to see how close the 3D was to the video. :P

I had to do the same thing! Gunboat's 3D is actually pretty impressive.
