Rarity guides
« on: June 14, 2008, 12:37:19 AM »
Are there any other rarity guides out there, other than DP?

Do you guys agree with DP's rarity whan it comes to TG-16/CD games?

I think New Adventure Island should be higher than a R3. Its the hardest R3 that I have ever searched for. Maybe an R5?

The DP's TG-16 rarity guide is completely bunk. I don't know of any other rarity guides for TG-16/PCE, but a good one would have to use more than a simple point system, just like a good review.

Are their particular games that you disagree with?

Why would you need anything other that DP? It has all the unsubstantiated bullshit hype one could ever want.

If you think New Adventure Island is hard to find you're in for a real treat later on...

Haha. Yeah, any self-proclaimed "rarity guide" is a load of horseshit, plain and simple.

I mean, you have to think-- who came up with these numbers? Was it just some random guy that did a search on eBay one day for all the TurboGrafx games and gave a rating of "common" to any game he saw more than 10 copies for sale of, and a rating of "rarity 5" (or whatever) to games that happened to only have 2 copies up for sale at that moment? Or did they send someone over to Hudson Japan to review the production run records for each and every game and devise their list based on that? Are these numbers based on any kind of actual information? Highly unlikely.

If you have questions about a particular game, just ask around these parts. Most of us know what's actually rare and what isn't.

New Adventure Island, for example, isn't any rarer than Air Zonk. Which is to say-- not rare.

Plus rarity isn't consistant. The same game can go for a while without showing up on eBay or much else and then the market gets flooded with the game, likely due to people wanting to cash in on it's perceived rarity. But its not always such a huge drop or gain either, most titles gradually shift in availability.

The DP guide actually describes the meaning behind each level of score, which is its own undoing. Dracula X is scored at a rarity of 5, but the following description suits it best-

R3: You’ll find these items through the proper channels (other collectors!), not as common “on the street”, but fairly common on the internet.

"Tengei Makyu II: Manji Maru" is one of the very best selling and most common games around and it's scored as a rarity of 5 as well.

Oh, they have descriptions of every "Rarity level?" (I've never actually looked at their list.) Haha, awesome. That pretty much nullifies things right there. Like Black Tiger pointed out-- "rarity" based on those factors is never consistent.

Ok, what are the Top 10 rarest US Hucards, in your opinion?

Would Magical Chase and Bonk 3 be 1 & 2?

Yeah, since those have confirmed production runs in the 1,500-3,000 ballpark which is far less than any other HuCard. I'm not sure a "top 10 list" would be feasible without actual production run numbers.

But realistically, Bonk 3 and Magical Chase aside (and maybe one or two others) all the HuCards had relatively similar print runs. Which is to say, lots and lots and lots.

Thanks. What do you think a fair price is to pay for Bonk 3? Loose card and complete.

Also, where do you put Neutopia 2, since I just picked up a complete copy? I paid about $40, did I do alright?

Sorry for all the stupid questions. :) I really am new to the TG-16 scene and am trying to learn.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $80-$90 for a copy of Bonk 3 HuCard complete (sans cardboard box). Loose, who knows, probably not as cheap as you'd hope. You'd probably be better off just trying to find a complete copy.

Neutopia 2 isn't rare. You did just fine at $40 for a complete copy. You probably could've found one cheaper eventually, but you didn't get ripped off or anything.

I thought I might have overpaid a little but it was 100% complete w/outer box and minty.

i had once the idea to build up a rarity-guide here on this forum, where all the guys here could help with. but it never game that far.

Thats a great idea and of all places this place could really set up a respected rarity/value guide from its members, again it could be very general but at least it would be something more in line. The DP guide is ok for general prices but not for the rarity numbers as Black Tiger mentioned it being bunk :D

Of the games listed on the DP guide i find the prices for PCE engine are jacked to shit and the tg16 stuff is meh!!!.
NES, DC, and SMS are the only ones for me that i feel are the closest on being right, again in general prices.

But anything is better than the bay  some days i wish they did not have the "buy it now" on ebay as a lot of people reference that as what the going rate is for that game " oh looky, Bonks Adventure is going for $25 "buy it now" wow i did not realize it was worth that much " whatev's
