Shinobi sucks!
« on: July 10, 2008, 05:40:10 PM »
Why in the Hell is Shonobi so bad on the PC Engine? It's really sad as the graphics are so well done, it looks so close to the arcade version, but no bosses and the controls just seem so crap! Does anyone know what in the Hell happened here and why this is such a bad version of Shinobi? Sadly, the Tengen NES game is better than this pile!

No bosses? There are bosses. What's wrong with the controls? It plays like a dream with a 3 button pad.

I'm a big fan of the arcade and series! I do realize the levels are mixed around a bit and the music is a little different, but that just adds character! haha. I think that graphically and musically its superior to the nes and master ports. However, I miss the bonus level at the end of the stage.

Stage 2 is missing (which had 3 or 4 rounds plus a boss).

The thing that erks me most about Shinobi is that you can't pull out your sword and
whack enemies when they're in close.

That's what I am talking about. There is no reason why the PC Engine port of Shinobi shouldn't be complete. The system should be able to handle the game easily. Most of the other Sega games I have seen ported over to the system turned out fine. Finally got to see Out Run running and I must say that I now need that game.

Sega didn't do the PC Engine port, Asmik did. It was released pretty early in the PCE's lifespan when all HuCards were 3 megs or less.

Cutting content has nothing to do with what the system can handle. During the 16-bit console days, cuts were normal to save on pricey memory. Many 16-bit console ports have missing levels and bonus stages. Even large games by top companies like SFII.

If Shinobi was ported by Hudson in 1995 as an Arcade Card CD game, then there would be no reason why the PC Engine port of Shinobi shouldn't be complete. We even hold the port of a much more advanced game like Strider up to this standard.

But if we're talking about a 3 meg HuCard by Asmik in 1989, then there's no reason why the PC Engine port of Shinobi should be complete.

What Black Tiger said.

But yeah, you shouldn't really be too hard on the pce's early releases.

I remember getting the Sega Genesis Forgotten Worlds and being upset that it was missing half of the levels from the arcade.  Then I picked up the PC-Engine SCD version when it was released.  I was a happy camper.  Man I didn't know early Hu card games only had 3 megs or less.  I think the pc-engine version of Shinobi is quite nice, even though it's not a true arcade port.  It's a good game to me in it's own right.

Dungeon Explorer, Neutopia and Bonk's Adventure are all 3 megs.

Dungeon Explorer actually amazes me with how much they crammed into a 3 meg cart.  The music (to me) is especially nice in Dungeon Explorer.  It sounded better than a lot of the other early games.  Like it used a different kind of synth or something.  I just remember really enjoying the music in that game.  I still do.

I agree with you about the sword. That was the only way to defeat some enemies standing next to crates or on ledges. I also miss the bonus stages. Other than that, it is pretty close to the arcade.

It plays like a dream with a 3 button pad.
I need to get a 3 button pad. Any other games that play like a dream with the 3 button pad?
