Intro to Ys III??
« on: July 21, 2008, 03:51:47 AM »
I am curious to know if the Japanese intro to Ys III has the same strange montage that occurs at the beginning of the US one.  Adol is a tall, blonde man with a body like Fabio and the art is completely out of phase with the anime of the original games.  I looked on youtube to find out, but no definitive answers.  If anyone owns the Japanese version, I'd appreciate your response.

Yes, the Japanese version has the same montage.  I don't know what the purpose of it was, but the graphics are definitely some of the most gorgeous on the Turbo, with many colours on-screen.  (So I don't mind the flaws in logic at all...)

Yeah, I've never understood WTF was up with that. I guess its just one more disappointing feature of Ys III.

Thanks.  Was really wondering if it was an American reinterpretation, but apparently not.  Strange.

there's no way the American side of things could have afforded to redo an opening animation.

I believe that it's just the legend of an ancient hero defeating "Demanicus", the same as Ys I & II has it's backstory. I don't remember if the fantastic translation and acting uses Adol's name before telling him at the end to go save Dogi's homeland (Kanai?).

But even if the translation makes it sound like the intro cinema is supposed to be the end of the game you're about to play, even though the events don't happen, I'm sure that it was originally just the backstory to give you a reason to stop Demanicus from being fully resurrected.

I took the cinema as a legendary tale being told long after the actual events took place, and like all legends, this one grew and became distorted over time.  It does name the statuesque hero as Adol and mentions his previous feats of awesomeness (Book I & II), but as is common in hero folklore, his visage is being presented as an ideal.  Similarly, Demanicus is presented as much bigger and scarier than he actually was in game.

yeah.  For a moment, I thought it might be a romanticized version of events that uses the stereotypical hero figure rather than the "boy" who we all know and love.  If that's the case, the guys at Falcom are more amazing than previously thought.

What dissuaded me from that thought, was the US cover art depicts the "buff" Adol as opposed to the red-headed youth.

To be more precise, that ancient hero, Genos(as in Genos Island, the island at the end of the game), an ancestor of Chester & Elena Stoddart, who originally sealed Galbalan(Demanicus).  But he settled in the area, & IIRC, started up the town of Redmont(Kenai).  At the end of the game, when Chester goes down to seal away Galbalan again & destroy the island, it's because he & Elena are only capable of it, being descendants of the original hero.  I don't think it's ever been explained how that Galbalan got over to this particular area.  It must've been some human(probably an ancester of Ernst & Geis) that used Eldeenian technology to try to create white &/or black emelas, which is how Galbalan's end up existing.  They are made up of ash emelas(emal stones) which is a by product of a human trying to make white or black emelas.  Only Eldeenian's can create white or black emelas.

The wiki on the series is quite accurate from what I can tell by scanning thru it:

I think in Ys 3, it seems like he's talking about Adol, but, I've gone over the cinema a million times, & I do think they were not trying to say that Genos was Adol, but, I could be wrong, I haven't talked to the janiter that did the opening cinema, to see if he knows if he was talking about Adol, or a different person alltogether :D
