Hi folks,
(Technically not my first post, but I'm still 'new' :D)

First off, very cool forum you have here. I picked up a TE a few weeks back, and found this place while looking for info on the TE sound fix. My TE now has perfect, loud audio.

After researching here for a few weeks, I finally pulled the trigger on a Duo-R today (plus an Arcade Card Duo, a Tap, and a second controller). I have a few questions I figured I'd throw out there in 'preparation' for the new bundle of joy that's en route to my house.

1. I'm in the US. What's the verdict on running a Duo-R off of 110V instead of the 100v it was designed for? I've seen everything from "It won't work" to "HuCards work, CDs don't" to "Fire and smoke!"  Do I need to be worried? If so, what's the best (safest) method to make sure my Duo-R stays in prime running condition? Step-down converter? DC adapter from Rat Shack?

2. What's the going rate for a Duo-R region switch install, and who here is doing them (besides Nat who is currently on hiatus)? Currently all of my HuCards are US, so I'll be locked to the TE for awhile.

3. Game recommendations, of course! Already in my crosshairs are the ones I was junked on years ago (note I never owned a Duo or TG16/CD of my own). Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Beyond Shadowgate, Cosmic Fantasy II, Ys, etc. are all on my list. And also Splash Lake and Ordyne. :D  I know Rondo is a must-have (already played through the PSP version) and Sapphire (yeah yeah, someday). Any others? Japanese titles are (obviously) OK also, as long as knowledge of the Japanese language isn't required to enjoy them (I can't see playing through something like Cosmic Fantasy without being able to read, but I imagine Sapphire is very playable).

Thanks!
JP

EDIT: I probably shoulda posted this in the PCE forum, huh? I guess it'll always be the Turbo Duo to me, regardless of it's nationality...

1.  No problems here on the voltage.  Sounds like some of the info you have heard have been downright laughable.

3.  Games to check out:

Son Son II  (easily a top 5 Hu card)
Genji Tsushin Agedama (great forced side scroller)
Kaze No Densetsu Xanadu  (has some similarities to the Ys games...kind of heavy on the japanese, but a very fun game)

Also...welcome aboard  :)

If you're planning on buying original games to play, don't bother with Beyond Shadowgate and Sapphire since they're really not worth it.

Some good cheap gaijin friendly CD games:

Monster Lair
Forgotten Worlds
Exile TG-CD
Neo Nectaris
DungeonExplorer II PCE
Legend Of Xanadu II
Super Darius
Side Arms Special
Fatal Fury Special
World Heroes 2
Kabuki Itouryoden

Welcome aboard.  Here's my answers:

1) I agree with nectarsis - the voltage difference shouldn't be a problem.  If you're paranoid (like me), then go ahead and use a step down converter or pick up a replacement power supply.

2) Fellow member turbokon performs console repairs and modifications.  Check here for prices and what not.

3) In addition to the other recommendations, I'd recommend the Ys series, Neutopia I & II, Bomberman '94, Godzilla, and Soldier Blade.

1. it will run a smidge warmer than it used to, but nothing major.

2. it would be cheaper to get a TG16.

3. depends on what genres of games you like.

Thanks for the tips, folks. I guess I will try powering the thing normally and see how that goes.

I'll also need to think about having the region mod done.

And thanks for the game suggestions! Any others, leaning more towards action titles and shmups?

Welcome :)

For shooters, I'd recommend:

Nexzr or Nexzr Special
Image Fight

For action, I'll just mention one game - New Adventure Island. It is one of the most addicting games I've ever played. You won't regret it.

You do know what the R in Duo R stands for right?  It stands for Radical, when I say Radical, I mean Radical to the extreme! And so now by default you are living on a higher level.

Actually, you should have consulted Aaron's compatibility page. You see the "R" stands for radical, but the "X" in "RX" stands for Xtreme. If you want the XTREME, you must have the Duo RX. I hope that clears everything up.

Ah but Ceti if you read Aaron's compatibility page closer you'd see that Radical to the extreme and Xtreme are clearly different.  See Radical to the Extreme is a step lower than Radical to the Xtreme.  He's certainly awesome but not Xtreme awesome (yet).  Common misconception.

Whoa!  Ceti.... Ceti... Hold on a minute, did you really have to tell him about the Radical Xtreme Duo?  I don't think he is ready yet..  Keep in mind this is the higher energy video game system and you cant overload him, he has to work his way up.

haha. Your Vanilla Ice avatar makes all this "xtreme" talk all the more poignant.
