How to solder transistor 2SC1815
« on: August 21, 2008, 07:24:03 PM »
although I can solder electronic parts pretty well, my knowledge of electronic schematics is very limited. However, I did make a few sinc separator circuits for my console to jamma projects, So I must be able to make a RGB amp for my PCE duo RGB mod (With a RGB Scart cable).

I studied the schematic on this page http://www.gamesx.com/grafx/pce_rgb.jpg but I can't figure out how the pins E, C and B  have to be connected. what does these letters mean, and on which wire (coming from left, top and down) do I have to solder which pin? and which type of capacitors do I use? (also for the sound fix I am planning to do). What is the difference between polarized and non-polarized?

E, B, and C are short for Emitter, Base, and Collector. The transistors in that pic are "NPN" (the opposite of PNP, so be sure to buy the right ones). If you look at the symbol for the transistor in this schematic the top wire is the Collector (because it "collects" the source voltage), the one pointing to the left is the Base (the ground, more or less), and the arrow is the Emitter (because it "emits" the amplified/switched voltage that they transistor is there to work with in the first place).

As for the capacitors, they are all listed by value in this schematic. Just buy a huge pack of capacitors with a large selection made for low voltage electronics and you'll be fine. The voltages will say 100V, 200V, whatever, but that's not important as its the maximum voltage rating. As long as its more than they 5 or 12 volts your circuit will use its fine. The important number is the part that says what the capacitance is. On this sort of thing this is measured in micro Farads, and is written as "μF".

"Polarized" can mean different things in different situations but mainly it referrers to something that, for whatever reason, is made to have voltage applied to it in only one direction.

How come nobody's made up a little PCB for these amplifiers anyway? It'd make them a lot smaller and easier to build.

A more useful question- if you're RGB-modding an American TG-16, do you have to amplify the composite video output (assuming you're stealing it from right before it goes into the RF unit) as well as the RGB, or can you just run it out as-is?

You do not have to amplify the composite at all if you are in Europe, even on a white engine. SCART TVs will take the signal fine. I can't speak for RGB monitors.

All you really need to amplify is the RGB.

Also there's a bit of info mising in the gamesx guide, I have the PC Engine no subete book that the mod is taken from. You can use a 2SC945 transistor if you cannot locate the 1815s.

where did u get your 2sc1815's?

These transistors can be had form Mouserhttp://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=EEns8I54Y6AnViSgt9qS6Q%3d%3das
well as everything you could need for this mod .

Could you please share more info on the mod? What is missing from the gamesx.com posts? Any more scans that u could upload?
