I've never beat Blazing Lazers/Gunhed on the default mode! I can nearly make it to the last level though. When you loose your weapon in that game, you're screwed.

Blazing Lazers -- I played that game to death when I first got the system (my brothers and I couldn't afford to buy new games for a long time, since we spent all our money on the cosole).

not that u asked, but here are my 2 cents:

1. at many points in the game, you need to shift your speed (select or start button?), and you need to do this according to the weapons you have.  For example, at the end of the game (last stage boss rush), you may only have the pea-shooter... so sometimes you need to put your speed up to the MAX and quickly fly back and forth (horizontally) to take out the enemies.  other times, you need to slow down to navigate the bullets....

2. BETTER TIP: The secret is to keep shooting the power-ups that "cycle" through I, II, III , IV.... keep shooting them and they eventually turn into a blinking rainbow sphere.

grab this sphere and (1) all enemies on the screen disappear and MORE IMPORTANTLY (2) the next time you die, you'll "re-spawn" and continue on your journey uninterrupted (instead of restarting at the checkpoint).

On default, I get like 15-20 of these "re-spawing" power-ups.  Even if you get sloppy and die towards the end of the game (the boss rush), you won't have return to the checkpoint and keep playing the bosses over and over.

the last boss is pretty easy on default.  find the speed that is appropriate, though.

Half the time I play through it I go through the whole game without being hit. I usually power up weapon III and shields as much as possible, if I hit something else I try to go  back to using weapon III. Just stick with that and you'll survive.

Awesome tips, Steve. I'm going to try those out whenever I can. I never really gave the speed adjustments any thought.

I use to always power up III laser (or should I say "lazer"?) with the fire power items; this makes a green laser that tracks down all enemies. I use to think that was the best until I read this walkthrough once that said a fully fire powered II is probably the best and now I agree. The tracking laser can be useful, but if there is an enemy comming right towards you and your laser is out somewhere else killing things, then you might be in a bad situation.

Which walkthrough do you mean?

Gradius and Salamander are some of my all-time favorites for any console (or even the arcade).  I just got import Hucards from Japan this week, and am very happy with the PCE conversions.  I also have really enjoyed Gradius 2: Gofer (another one I got last week).  Parodius Da is on the way here from Japan, as well.  I just got Final Blaster recently, and it is quite fun.

I've had Lords of Thunder for a few years.  The soundtrack still blows my mind.  It is probably one of the greatest shooters ever created.

I've just started building my PCE/Turbo collection, after a hiatus of a few years.  I've not had the opportunity to play some of the great Hudson shooters, but they are on my list of "must-buys".  I had bid for Gunhed on Ebay, but some bid sniper came along in the last few minutes and stole it.  :)

All the Konami PCE shooters are solid.  check out twin bee (although some folks don't like the power-up mechanics)...

Twin Bee is a pretty fun game, although I really don't like the power up system.

Yeah, it's challenging... but I got used to it playing Stinger on NES... so now I dig it.  If I hadn't played Stinger to death... I don't know if I'd have as much patience for it now as I do.

Gonna have to go with in no order of ranking:

1. Blazing Lazers/Gunhed
2. Super Star Soldier
3. Lords of Thunder
4. Gates of Thunder
5. Aldynes (SuperGrafx)
6. R-Type I & II

I have Super Darius and Super Darius 2 but I didn't care for them to much compared to the above.

Salamander and Gradius II have been on my to-get list.

I still have yet to play Gradius II. I'm not really a fan of the Gradius series (although I love Parodius), but this game looks a lot more promising from screenshots and a video I've seen.

No, I always considered this a tough game... but a fellow at another message board said that with the right strategy this isn't too tough and it isn't that bad of a game.

I think he might have been teasing me, at least a bit, but ... who knows?  I never gave the game a chance...  years later, I did buy a sealed Japanese version.  My goal: to beat DB and love it :)

I always die during the 4th scene, haven't played an awhile, but now I can't wait to get home and fire it up.  I picked up a new Japanese version as well.
