Well, I would be accepting of that comment if his point was that it's simply dressed up with sexual/"homoerotic" material and actually plays like any ol' shooter...

...except that, even then, the assertion would be inaccurate.  Choaniki has rhythmic gameplay--blasting away groups of small fiends and then utilizing the MEN'S BEAM on flocks of larger ones--the likes of which can be found in very few of its contemporaries.  And like its spiritual cousin, Gynoug/Wings of Wor, it's a lot heavier on projectiles than most shooters were at the time (particularly sidescrollers).

I don't think that current gaming journalists even play Turbo shooters. Their reaction to each new release is "yet another TG-16 shooter..." but an abundance of games of any genre on other retro consoles isn't news.

I like game journalists.

Its comic relief.    They often try to come off as seasoned hardcore back in the dayers, but we all know theyre just being fed information from their dopey boss (I picture pointy-haired dilbert boss), and they dont know anything.

Id bet most of them started gaming when PSX came out and before that they barely touched games.

I wish I could find the Golden Axe beast rider review where the guy said he loved playing it back in the day at the arcade but liked it more when it came to Sega because it had multiplayer.

Yknow cause the arcade one didnt and all.
