I would take home the exotic PC Engine version...... 8)

That was awesome, Black Tiger. I love home port comparisons.  I have a question for you:

If you walked into a bar and saw the SFC/MD/PCE versions of CE which one would you
bring home?

I'm interested in hearing what everybody has to say about this.  8)

I remember looking over those two pages everyday for weeks waiting for the game to arrive in the mail, and probably also during the weeks it took to save up the money for it. I also remember even then picking out the colored arcade style fonts in the screenshots.

i have the genesis version and the Pc Engine version,i can tell you this and it is my opinion.the pce version of street fighter 2 ce blows away the Genesis version.graphics and sounds wise.the controls on both versions are tight though.as far as the snes version goes,it is more of a toss up.the snes having some edge in the sound and graphics.never really played the snes version much though.

I sure am glad that NEC decided to "incorporate the same button system as found on the SNES pad".  Jesus Christ on crutches, I can't even tell the button layout apart between the SFC and NEC pads.  The shoulder buttons and even the backwards alphabet letters are the same!  Oh wait.  The only thing that is similar is that the buttons are numbered backwards and Nintendo's are alphabetized backwards for some retarded reason I've never been able to comprehend.

What they forgot to write about in the article was how there would be sooooo many unsold copies of the PCE version going for super cheap in the future.  I cannot understand why they didn't mention this.  I mean, I know about it now so why didn't they know about it when they wrote the article?  This is why everyone hates EGM with an extreme passion.

Awesome work B_T.

I agree with nat. More unashamedly biased remarks in favour of PCE.

The Genesis version has a feature that not even the arcade has.  When you turn on the game, you see a graphical "SEGA" logo that was omitted from ALL OTHER VERSIONS!  It appears that only the mighty Genesis has the sheer power and the programmers with the mad skillz to incorporate such a radical feature with technology from the future.  That's why it has more MEGA POWER.

Another cool thing the Genesis one had (maybe the SNES verison does too?) was that team battle mode thing like KoF. If I recall though, when you won a match, you would switch to your next character instead of continue using the character you won with, which kinda ruined the purpose.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Thanks for the fantastic article Black Tiger.  There's more than enough detail to satisfy the pickiest nutter.

The green box that has some sort of symbols written on it in the Arcade version, looks like "o2" on PC Engine and Super Famicom, but clearly says "JOE" on the Mega Drive version.

Clearly in honor of Joe Redifer, eh?

The Genesis version actually has most of what the SNES version does but the PCE version doesn't and vice versa, plus cool unique features like the arcade intro cinema, animated continue faces and Group Battle mode.

It's only technically limited in some ways with its graphics and sound. If its aesthetic limitations were brought up to par with the other ports, it'd probably be considered the most complete home version.

Today I added comments about the music fade outs and screenshots with a blurb about the censored Genesis intro.

Damn straight it's in honor of me.  When Capcom was designing the Sega version, they asked "who the hell owns a Sega system anyway?  They suck and it is popular to hate on them!".  Sega responded with "Well, we know Joe Redifer owns one.  He writes us letters telling us what to do, but we don't listen and that's why we are doomed to failure in the future".  Capcom said "Joe must be great!  We will honor Him in the Sega version!"

Over the years, I've occasionally heard people say that they believe that the SNES/SFC version has the best line scrolling effect.

After carefully comparing high quality footage recorded from real hardware, I've come to the definite conclusion that all three ports have an identical line scroll effect. Both in how the image appears at each stage of scrolling and the consistency of the animation. The only difference is in the background tiles themselves.

I made a video comparing the floors. It's the best quality I could do with the software I have, but I think that it's still pretty clear how similar each version is. The main shortcoming, is that I didn't have a good enough SNES S-Video cable when I recorded the footage and it's not nearly as clear as the others.
