Anyone remember the TG-CD pack-in CD+G disc?
« on: October 31, 2008, 01:11:35 PM »
Back in the day, my mother, the saint, got me the TG-CD system for Christmas the year it came out. As everyone knows, it came with Ys I+II. What I never hear mentioned is the fact that it (well, mine at least) also came with a CD+G (CD+Graphics) disc. All I remember about it were two songs included on the disc: Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and Little Feat's "Representing the Mambo". While these songs played, still pictures scrolled around the screen and, in Hendrix's case, trippy background effects strobed on and off. Two things I'm not sure of are 1) if it was branded as a Turbografx disc, and 2) what else was on it. I lost mine along with the CD hardware years ago, but I still have the TG-16 itself.

I've rooted around on the internet for info, but all I've managed to find is one page where a guy seems to mention the disc I had, but nothing I don't already know. The person that responded to him didn't seem to know about it.

My questions are many. Does anyone have any general information on this CD+G disc? Did every TG-CD system have one? Was every copy the same or does each have different songs? Was it branded as Turbografx? What else was on it? Does anyone have one? Has anyone ever seen it on eBay? How much does it go for? What is it called, specifically? It was a pretty lame pack-in, really, but I'd love to get another copy just to relive the experience and, y'know... just have one.

Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed on the boards. I can't find reference to it anywhere.

So..... anyone?

Shit, you're right. I guess someone else got that for me as a gift. The only other CD game I had (and still have) was Addams Family. Ugh.

Ys 1&2 was a Duo pack in.

Yup, my mistake. I think I get confused because Ys I+II was the first real game I had for TG-CD. Hard to believe there was no pack-in apart from the CD+G sampler.

Speaking of which, I found this: http://carrotnetwork.com/ryuker/images/turbografx/turboedge0102/pages/turboedge010203.html

...which makes me think that maybe I got the TG-CD for Christmas of 1991, since that's when the "free pack-in CD+G sampler" was going on.

Anyone have any more info?

The CD + G disc was a pack in with the TG16 CD ROM system. It does not have a Turbo Grafx logo on it. It was a promotional product of Warner New Media and was titled "A New Dimension" (Use those keywords in your next ebay search). There were 2 variants that were randomly distributed (one with a red label and one with a pink label), though they had identical track lists which are:

 1) Love is Dangerous by Fleetwood Mac
2)There is no Time by Lou Reed
 3) Pretty Girls Don't Cry by Chris Isaak
 4) Nessun dorma by Placido Domingo
 5) This Land Is Your Land by Odetta, Arlo Guthrie & Co.
 6) Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix
 7) America by Van Dyke Parks
 8. Symphony #7 Movement IV by Beethoven
 9) Talk To Me by Bonnie Raitt
10) She Fades Away by Alphaville
11) Representing the Mambo by Little Feat
12) Ooh Las Vegas by Gram Parsons
13) Symphony #9, Scherzo by Bruckner

Whenever I have seen someone on ebay selling a "boxed complete" CD ROM system, I always ask if it includes the CD + G disc. They always tell me "no". I believe that only the ones released around Christmastime actually had the pack in (as well as a label that indicated the free CD + G disc).

Since the Turbo Grafx CD player was capable of playing CD + G (which are mostly used for karaoke), I guess Warner tried to cater to that crowd by supplying the pack in discs and NEC didn't have to sell a system without software...so to speak. A win win situation for both companies I suppose.

P. S. If anyone is wondering why the numbered track list has a period after the 8 instead of a parenthesis, it is because that is the icon for the smiley face with shades.

I remember the CD+G disc that came with the TG-CD Rom system (not the Duo). Although I think the tracks were different than the one u listed Hoobs. I do remember Hendrix, but want to say it was like track 2. And I remember the song "I wanna know what your thinking" by Information Society. I actually enjoyed that one. Anyone have the same disc still?

Some of those songs are the same as the CD+G disc included with the original Sega CD.  Actually I think the Sega CD disc has a worse selection overall.

Yes, the Sega CD CD+G has the Information Society song on it... one of the few listenable tracks!  I have that disc.  Played it on my Turbo to see which system outperformed the other when it came to RAW CD+G POWER!  Both systems lost.  Or was it the consumers who lost?

I thought it was "Light my Fire", but I'm sure we're thinking of the same song.  Yeah, that's on the Sega disc.

That's the one, hoobs! Thanks for finding the info. (Where did you find it, btw?)

Great stuff!  :D

P.S. - "Light My Fire" was a Doors song.

When I bought my TGCD back in the day, it did not come with the CD+G disc, and yes, I bought it new in the store.
