Alright..I am putting myself on the laughing block, But I love this game. Granted, i am a platformer/RPG/shooter guy. Back in the day, my buddy and i would play series after series of this game against each other,and now like 14 years later we picked it back up and still luv it. yes, the programming is faulty, sometimes it doesn't even follow real basketball rules, like charging callls and free throws for the wrong transgressions. there is no music, and a weird in betwen courts screen where you pick plays...BUT it is not commercial, and the players have goofy names named after the programmers, all with different abilities, and it is better than takin it to the hoop, (in which the 2nd player cannot pick up a rebound, try it and see)...with just a little more tweaking, they could have done so much with it, especially on cd...if only mindrec would... dunno..just another crappy turbo game that for some reason stuck and its reply value has been immense....any feedback?

hey, i had a blast playing this and the other tv sports games back in the day. take note, however, that we also enjoyed (to a lesser extent) motoroader... so our standards weren't that high

The basketball game was quick and had tight controles, if i recall correctly, and that made it more fun than football and hockey, if only slightly. I think we played hockey and football the most, however, for some reason.

since i never was a fan of sports games, though, i can't really judge these games objectively... and I still love nindendo ice hockey, tecmo bowl and blades of steel on NES... so I have a warped measuring stick ...

Speaking of basketball, I always liked Takin' It To The Hoop. The artcover was awesome! Who was that guy?! The net looks brandnew? Too funny.

I used to play this on my friends Amiga, one of the best basketball games ive played. Loved that version at least.

I don't like TV Sports Basketball much, nor football because I especially don't like football. I do enjoy TV Sports Hockey however

. For basketball games on the Turbo (well there are only two I believe), I prefer Takin' it to the Hoop! It has funny sprites, simple gameplay, and a cool 3-D dunk! Alright!!!

Yes, very good, but as far as Hockey games go, Ice Hockey for the NES has always been my favorite.

Still love to play that game. Temco Bowl was always a favorite for football games back in the day. Still haven't played TV Sports Basketball, but I remember being very excited about TV Sports Football back when it was released. I was very disappointed when I actually got the game though...

Ordered a sealed copy of it cheap the other day though so I could give it another try and have it just for the memories.

I like it too, but it's no fun when you realize that player 2 can't rebound...some glitch..does anyone have a rememdy or code? I recommend everyone play TV sports basketball, initially you'll be like..This Sucks! but then you'll see good controls and depth despite its numerous flaws...[/quote]

i don't think i've ever witnessed such a positive discussion of TG-16 sports titles. A month or two ago, I bought TV sports football for the NOVELTY (and it was like $4). Not that I'll play it much, since the names of the players aren't in English. I wonder if I still have the US hucard. I know I've never owned / played Takin' it to the hoop, though.

lol..i think you're right steve! another cool thing about TVSB is that at different times one player willl go on this crazy hot streak even though his shooting rating may be marginal...makes for great fun...another satisfying thing I love is the sweet sound of "IT"S GOOD " when you nail a 3-pointer...lol..I could go on and on...Hey steve...do you think Mindrec can do modifications to the code to fix some things or even put it on SCD? they seem to indicate that they do that for some people...maybe I'll email 'em[/quote]

dude, it's funny how you're getting me interested in pulling out TV Sports Basketball and 5 controllers and having a TG-16 party game night! I'm serious!

Mindrec rules, but bt garner is the one who does all the coding (i think)... and unless he thought it would be worthwhile... I don't know if he would consider TV sports basketball (perhaps if enough folks asked for it... but is that a likely scenario?). I don't know of anyone else who has homebrewed ACTUAL games (not simply demos)... so it seems that bt garner is our only hope! Plus, he's got himself a bunch of projects he's involved with now (homebrew run-n-gun, plus an RPG).

Even if Mindrec was interested in recoding TVSB, they would have to consider: would recoding be straightforward, or would there be really tough obstacles (i don't know what the obstacles might be for a sports game, but on RPG translation projects, there's always a question as to whether the text / fonts are easy to manipulate / retool ).

personally, i would have no problem pledging money to Mind Rec (or another reliable resource) to support the "recoding" of certain games. While i might not see a return on my investment, it would be kool if the turbo / pc engine community was that tight. UTOPIA. ok, i've been rambling far too much...

TVS Football is pretty good if you can get 3 other people to play with you. TVS Hockey is also much better with people than AI controlled team mates.
Never got my friends interested in TVS Basketball, being constantly called for charging really ticked them off.

One of the turbo's biggest advantage over other systems was being able to have 5 people playing and only a few titles really supported it.

I think the biggest problems with the turbo sports games is there were never any sequels made to improve or add new features to what were mostly really basic games.

Ah yes..the charging call...you can learn to avoid it but it takes practice...one thing I love about that game is that you can actually play body position defense(much of the time.not all!) most other "commercial" B-ball games rely on jumping and stealing the ball...I like the fact that you can make a defensive stand if you have to. Steve, Yeah it'dbe cool to play 5 players but we could never get 3 more people interested:( it would be un though...think of all the new dynamics involved![/quote]

Oh yeah.....steve, Bt garner emailed me back and explained to me some technical stuff that zinged over my head but basically it would be a time consuming effort if not impossible...though you can put the game onto a cd thru some arcane means..I dream of an improved super cd TVSB...<sigh> also, there is the legal matter of messing with someone else's code...maybe I should contact cinemaware..are they still around? by the way, now that I am ammassing valuable games, I was thinking I should probably burn them to keep the originals minty..how would I do it? anyone? er..maybe that's not a subject to discuss...

making back-ups of games you own is perfectly legal, as far as I am concerned, and as far as consumers' rights are concerned. unfortunately, 99.99% of the time folks are asking how to obtain ROMs and ISOs they don't own... so it's difficult to discuss this topic on many forums... even though it is your right as a consumer to back-up software.

I have yet to figure it out, myself, but there are sites out there that explain it.

as far as CINEMAWARE... in the early 90's they declared bankruptcy (i think) and went out of business (i think). Lo and behold, at some point they became a viable company again because they are alive and kicking now (check out their wonderful website).

Go to the vault to see It Came from the Desert, TV Sports series (hey, there was a BOXING game), Lords of the Rising Sun, etc.

When I was writing up commentary for the TurboPlay Archives, I was curious about TV Sports Baseball (completed, or nearly, but never released for TG-16) and the series in general (TV Sports BOXING). I was amazed that cinemaware had come back from the dead, and even more amazed that they took the time to document their back catalogue so nicely. I was hoping they would update the "vault" more frequently... but it's been several months (6 or so) since I've been there and still no new updates...

finally, i'd love to hear what bt garner said. cut n paste some of the stuff, if you think it would be appropriate
