Ys I, II, IV
« on: March 29, 2005, 02:09:02 PM »
I recently got me a copy of Ys 4 and its seems very cool, except for the fact that the voices are in japenese, everything else is english tho.  Just wondering, does anyone think this was the best Ys game?  Visually, it looks much better than Book I and II but is it a better game?  Just want some thoughts on which game is better.

Also, is Ys III worth picking up?

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys indeed does rule. In fact, I have been playing it for the past day or so with the English translation for the first time and I am loving it more than I ever have. I am to the end now, so now I get to see what the ending is like in English :) .

By the way, I assume you are using the translation patch right since you said the voices weren't in English but the rest of the game was? If you are, there should be a file in the YsIV.cab or whatever it was called that has a text file with the voices translated. It might not be as fancy as a sub, but it still works fine.

As much as I love Dawn of Ys, I still like Ys Book I & II just a little bit more. Now that I have been using the translation patch, I love Dawn of Ys even more but the original is just the tiniest bit better. I like Ys Book I & II more mainly because of the fantastic story and music. Ys IV also has awesome music and a very cool and interesting story, but it just doesn't quite live up to the greatness of Ys Book I & II's music and story. However Ys IV has much better graphics, improved gameplay, and more exploration. These games are my all time favorites and I still have yet to play a game I think is better than these two (or three I should say).

For Ys III, I definitely say it's worth picking up, weither your a Ys fan or not. It's no where near as good as Ys Book I & II or Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys and that's mainly because it's nothing like them. Neverless I think it's still a pretty cool and fun game to play by itself.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

There isn't any english around the ending. The last text is around when Leo dies and Dogi tells you to ditch him. After that, its all voice(unless you just want to read the credits).

The people who made the english patch are working on a voice patch as well. Hopefully it'll get released by the end of the year.

As for which Ys is better, gameplay wise Ys IV's the best. My favorite(s) will always be Ys I/Book Of/Vanished Omens since mastering it back when it was first released on Sega Master System(before walkthroughs and the internet).

If someone hasn't yet  played any PC Engine Ys and only want to try one, you might as well go with IV, unless story is all that you care about.

As for the voice script, if you didn't get it with a patch you can just grab it off of GameFAQs.

Ya, thats what I'm saying. There's no text in the last few dungeons or during the ending cinemas.

My new Duo RX doesn't seem to play cdr's very well(music cuts out, long loads). So once I got near the end, I thought back to previous playings and realized that there wasn't going to be anymore text after that and switched to my original copy.

Thats the only reason I noticed. I don't know if the credits are actually in english though, since I can't get them to load with the patched cd.

But I just tried the game on my Turbo Duo and it seems to run fine.

I hope the Duo RX just doesn't handle cdr's well and its not my system.

WHen I first burned the patch to a CD-R, I used one of these cheap CD-Rs I got in a bundle and it ran terribly on my Duo and would take forever to load stuff and I literally mean forever. I burned it again on another CD-R, a more trustworthy one and it worked fine. Sometimes it's better to get the more expensive CD-Rs I guess.

Thats what I was thinking when I burned it. I remember verbatum being a good brand years ago, maybe they're not so hot now.

I used Verabtum before and thought they were quite good. Stay away from those CD-Rs with no labels and these ones called "D" or something.

I forgot that I actually know that its my Duo RX because the game works fine in my Turbo Duo.

I've never had any problems playing any type of cdr in my Turbo, but the RX struggled right from the get go.

Its fine though, since I own original copies of pretty much every PCE CD I want to play.

I just wanted an RX to be my main system and get it pimped out with LED, region switch & S-Video.

Oh god when I first read this I thought it said "...and get it pimped out with Legion". I don't think anything can get pimped out with that game!

What are you talking about?

It has the best voice acting of any Turbo/PCE game.

Especially the level one intro/commentary.

You know, I don't think I know what I was thinking about. The vocals are the best ever made in a video game! Final Zone II makes second.
