super grafx
« on: November 29, 2008, 08:40:42 PM »
So I was thinking about buying a new NEC console to upgrade my TG-16/CD w/ System Card 3.0...

Is a SuperGrafx unit worth grabbing?  From what I gather, it plays its like, 10 super grafx games, all the hucards, and if i get the stuff, I can play all the CD games also?

With this thing though, I would then have to do a region mod so I can play english hucards...?

hmm.

Yea, you would have to region mod it to play US games, which would then cause issues with one of the Supergrafx titles. There is only 5 Supergrafx only titles, and Darius Plus and Alpha have a Supergrafx mode. Dont get one unless you know what you are getting into completely. Try roms of the Supergrafx titles out first on Magic Engine or something. This way you can make sure you are getting one for the right reasons. Just buying one with no intention of getting the games for it would be a waste of money.

As for playing all the Cd titles available on it, you would either need a Super Cd Rom 2 add on, with a Arcade Card Duo, or you would need a Briefcase Combo with a RAU-30 adapter and a Arcade Card Pro. This isn't a venture to take lightly. If all you really seek is the ability to play PCE titles, then mod your TG deck, or have someone do it, or buy a import adapter. Either option is cheaper and easier then just buying a Supergrafx with a Cd add on. The adapter or mod will allow you to use the Arcade Card Pro. The only titles you will then miss out on are the Supergrafx ones, honestly no big deal to most. As for the ability to use a Avenue 6 pad, you can swap its cable with a US TG pad cable and you will be in business.

The SuperGrafx is definitely worth grabbing if you are a NEC enthusiast! I love the hell out of my SuperGrafx. The games may be few, but they rock! I'm a big fan of the Ghouls n' Ghosts games, so I was naturally thrilled to play the SuperGrafx port. The 1941: CounterAttack port is also very bad-ass!; it had me playing for hours. If you have extra cash to spend, I say go for it.

There are reasons why SGX appeals to people -- it's uniqueness, part of being the only true "all-in-one" PCE solution, looks, etc. etc.

However, if you just want it for playability sake, you're better off just modding the TG-16 & getting an arcade card pro.  Then you can play everything PCE/TG-16 but the 5 SuperGrafx titles.

And if you break down those 5 SGX titles a bit further, only 3 are exclusive to the console -Aldynes, Granzort, BattleAce - and only Aldynes is supposed to be great (I've only tried Battle Ace, and it's okay, but not a real keeper IMO).  In addition, if you do mod the Supergrafx, Aldynes is the one that's supposedly negatively affected by the mod... (though I just don't get that why that'd be the case if it was properly modded... It doesn't make sense, logic-gate wise.. anyway...).

As for the other 2 titles - 1941 & GnG - there are other "arcade-perfect" ports out there, so I personally don't see the extra incentive getting the SGX just for them, at least for sole sake of just playing them.

For me, after finding out that I didn't care too much the SGX library, I sold mine off to someone who'd get more enjoyment out of it than myself - to mike here, actually.   :)

Yep, and I use it to this day thankful that I bought it from you :)
The only game I lack now is Darius Plus and 1941 Counter Attack.
Im not going to bother with Darius Alpha.

Here is a more interesting thought.

If I just mod my TG-16 control pads to be 6 button, I can play TG/PCE HuCards, and all the SCD games, and then....

I could just buy a SuperGrafx because they kick ass?

and have two thingies setup?

(It probably is pretty senseless to buy a whole new CD adapter setup when I got one...)

I should spend the money on Sapphire instead!

PCE Shmups countdown: 111/111 (all clear!!)
Sega does what Nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together!^^

And the ACD games as well, provided you have the ACD Card Pro.  Hell, if you mod the TG16, there's no reason to not get the ACD card in your situation.  I mean, selling off your US System 3.0 card would probably net you *more* than what you'd need to upgrade to the ACD Card Pro.

I'd say that's the exactly the way to go about it in your situation.

BTW, this brings up a question for the rest of you here.  Has anyone ever tried to mod a Duo Tap to fit into the TG?  That'd be more practical than modding every single 6-button controller you want to use with a TG16 system.
