U got the plastic still on the box....that is how I opened my Cosmic Fantasy 2 (but I used a razor for a perfect cut). Nice

Neutopia.....53 (complete w/box)

Send in the clones! (*cue Star Wars music)...always wanted to say that (or type). Today's countdown neverendingly narrows north to gnarly nirvana with Neutopia. Commonly referred as Zelda with 16-bit graphics and what's wrong with being a clone, huh? Sure, it lacks originality and imagination, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be any less fun!  Take for example the Disney games made by Capcom for the NES, SNES, and Gameboy. Ducktales/Darkwing Duck has a Megaman-like selection screen. Rescue Rangers follows a SMB3 map overlay. Tailspin's a carbon copy of Fantasy Zone, and Goof Troop is essentially a Zelda clone without the Master Sword. All n' all, these games were fun as they were meant to be. However that is not to say every developer should copy everybody else. But I can sympathize as nowadays it's hard for someone to come up with an game that's hasn't been done already. My message to game makers on the clone route is don't approach half-heartedly, try to make a game that can stand on it two feet,  add some new features to make stick out...but only as long as its fun to play (I'm looking at you Acclaim and LJN. )

Actually that's how the game came as when I bought it. Apparently the last owner handled their games specially well.

Last Alert.....52 (complete w/box)

Another awesome addition to my absolute all-out adventure, this Last Alert entry was made by possible by zektor (again!). Hope his financial situation and as well as many gamers on these boards and others respectively like it. Times are really tough now. Unemployment has reached all-time high, with some places reaching up to 14%. People working overtime, cutting corners, counting every penny and doing whatever to make ends meet to survive this financial disaster we put ourselves through. Gamers especially having to sell off collections (or bits of it) to pay the bills. It's really a sad sight to such things happen when something you put your heart, soul, and possibly your life then the next *snap* GONE! All because of some bad luck of the draw. I hope I never (a word I rarely use) have to make that decision. This is going out to all gamers making sacrifices, I wish you all a fast economic recovery and come of this hellhole with head high, smile on our face, and games in hand. Good luck everyone.

Galaga '90.......51 (complete w/box)

Today's countdown contestant is the Galaga '90! Now this entry is special! Why? Cause' I've reached the 90 games Mark!

With 21 countdown posts under my belt, I want to ask you guys a few things. What do you think of the thread so far and what parts do you like about it? It is my amazing all-knowing alliterations? How I dissect certain aspects of a game? Or relating my personal stories or views? Really would like to hear what you think. So, don't be afraid to your two cents.

BTW, I've updated my Turbo Grafx current status chart and many cover have been blacked out. But have a long way to go, if you got what I'm looking and want to trade or sell. Give me a pm.

Only 51 to go.

Nice!! I love this thread.. Finding each game is a mini adventure and I dig hearing about it. The photos are good too.. nice to see the old box art. Hopefully someday I'll have the entire US on my shelf.

If you're insinuating that's I throw money around...then I'm piss-poor job explaining myself.

First off, I'm a cheapskate (actually semi-cheapskate). I don't buy anything unless I know/think I'm getting a good deal out of it. The last 3 entries in my countdown (last alert, neutopia, and galaga '90) costed no more than $40. I don't go to Gamestop unless I have one of their weekly coupons for 35% or B2G1 on their merchandise. So even if I spend $100 on games, the most likely case will be I got $200 worth of gaming. My penny-pinching doesn't stop with video games. I always try to squeeze a dollar or two out of many household application like using my roommate grocery card to get the best deal at the supermarket. (We just got a 3 pounds of pork for 5 bucks! ) When I go out to eat with my friends, we always pick the place that's having a special on a particular day (i.e. 1/2 half off BBQ wing, $10 coupon for any $40 purchase, etc.).

As for life outside the internet, I'm a grad student and don't get paid a lot (around a grand or so a month). Cheapskate is not only a necessity but a standard. Rent for my apartment is $525 a month includes heat, electricity, internet, cable, water and all other utilities in one neat package (and most likely how I'm able to shave a few hundred for other things including gaming). Though the space is small and my friend has commented that I live in a shoebox, but it's a secured shoebox with all the additional security put in. Despite the fact, they've risen my rent twice in a row for two years. When I first got here, it was $475. But still, I try to put a bottle cap around $100 for all gaming apparel per payday. (Get paid every 2 week for a total of $200/month.) My financial situation is okay as long as I finish my projects, keep my grades up, try to keep my adviser happy, and don't go on too many shopping/gaming binges.

Don't beat yourself over it. You're like the fourth guy on this thread who made that mistake.

But I don't know why in hell when it comes to countdowns, your brains get crossed between numbers and prices. What's up with that?

I am the 5th guy that made that mistake. But then I noticed the numbers were going down in sequence...  :-k
But maybe we were just trying to compute how much you were spending on this quest for a boxed collection. Question - have you turned away alot of sales because the box had one too many creases? I have obtained a few boxes for games and they are NEVER in good shape. I would rate them as C's.

After frequently browsing Ebay horde of pig seller stores, the #1 culprit will always be price. But there have been rare occasions I've turned down items cause they weren't "up to par". There was an Air Zonk (complete w/box) for $57 or BO but the box had too many folds, bends, and creases, it was ridiculous. The same thing for a JJ & Jeff selling for $8. To sum it up, yeah I have a threshold but I have a bigger threshold in the "price" department.

What do you think of the thread so far and what parts do you like about it?

It's an interesting and entertaining read, though the alliterations are sometimes a bit forced and it could benefit from a little proof reading.  If you're open to suggestions, it'd be interesting to see where each title was sourced and how much it set you back.  Though perhaps not, as some yahoo will undoubtedly try to piss on your parade, berate your intelligence, and tell you that you've been screwed.

Most of my stuff comes from Ebay or from the DP forums. If it comes from a peculiar source, such as, a fellow Turbo collector or never-heard-of-store, I usually mention it like I did when zektor helped me get Last Alert and the manual for Ghost Manor. The next entry is a popular sealed game I got for a good price and you wouldn't believe where I got it from.

As for asses pissing on my parade, I already had people thinking I spent $60 for Dungeon Explorer and $51 for Galaga '90 and their reactions weren't bad, rude or condensing at all. I didn't feel they were putting me down or condensing. They were actually curious and inquisitive and that's what I like.

Ninja Spirit....50 (sealed)

Yo yo yo! Fellow Turbo enthunsiasts in reaching the high hopes of collecting by exchanging low quantities of cultural greenback in the countdown. That's right...its SEALED!  :D And I got for $15! :D :D You know what the best part is? Would you believe I got this from England?

That's right, my search for a US collection goes international! Crossing the ponds in the UK. Searching the prized wieners and chocolate of Germany. Frolicking the country side of France. Although it's not peculiar to stumble upon US games in foreign countries, but I was quite surprised to find sealed American Turbo games for dirt cheap price (the trifecta of awesomeness). That's how I managed to get Ninja Spirit and 2 sealed games (which will be mentioned in future entries) for $42 shipped. This was the tip of the iceberg. Sealed Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Lords of the Rising Sun, Ninja Spirit and more all within the range of $10-15 EACH. There was a seller with a NEW European Turbo Grafx 16 package with 10 sealed games plus 6 loose ones for 100 pounds. Equivalent to around $130-140. Sadly I couldn't get these due to lack of funds at the time. Hell, I missed out in getting a sealed Monster Lair for $20 and had the fund to get it but didn't trust the guy enough. It was my first international purchase. Anyway, I feel going international may be the last haven on earth to great Turbo games for an affordable price before the GameSquads of the world come along and devour everything into greasy pockets. So, extend your search beyond our borders, you may be surprised with what you find.

Here's where I bought it:
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/The-Ninjas-Castle__W0QQ_armrsZ1

Most of the goodies have been picked clean, so set your expectations too high.
