Where to get an RGB compatible monitor?

EDIT: I now have a PSOne LCD screen on the way that I'm going to mod to use as my "testing monitor". I'll still probably be getting that box that Duo R keeps talking up too.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on finding an RGB compatible monitor...

Here are some things I know:

- Buy used so it's affordable.
- Old Amiga monitors are favorites, especially the Commodore 1084.
- Look locally (craigslist, ebay, etc.) to avoid paying a ton on shipping.

That's what I've got for now. I'm in MA so I'm trying to find something pretty close.

RG - I gave up on this a long time ago. I know we are all attracted to the notion of RGB monitors, but they are rare to find unlike the UK market. I suspect you are considering the RGB to component route however.... Save the money you would have spend on the monitor, use your existing component capable TV and buy the box!

Buying an xrgb unit would give you an RGB input with a 480p output, good for plugging into a VGA monitor or even a HDTV with a VGA input.

Other than that, you could look into getting a used monitor from an arcade machine...

I just have concerns running a interlaced game in progressive mode. Where do the extra lines come from? Hidden deep withing the Hu6260 chip??? LOL

I have one of these converted to SCART in, and the SCART uses composite for sync so you don't have to build a signal stripper. I don't know if anyone would be interested? The US Gamecube will not work on it as it doesn't have RGB out, but if you sit it on your Gamecube you can use anything else on it that has a SCART out.

But it's only a 5 inch screen. I really like these however, because they don't make old consoles look super blocky. The PCE looks great on it, blows the LT out of the water. I stopped using my LT after I did this conversion.

Anyone interested? I suppose any RGB monitor sold in the UK for a console would work too after conversion. Pulling sync out of the video is probably a standard too.

The postage on these would be low too. They aren't heavy. Though I suppose at the end of the day the signal conversion box might be preferable to many. I used mine in Japan as a tester screen for consoles I modded and shipped out to the UK with a SCART cable, but I don't need it any more.

Duo R - I'm pretty seriously considering the box you have posted info about in the Repair/Mod thread. That would work great for component.

However, I'd also like to have some RGB monitor/display for testing RGB mods as PCE Sales mentioned. So I'm thinking I'll get two pieces of gear...

ooPo - I've heard about those XRGB devices. Have you had good experiences with them?

PCE Sales - That might be exactly like what I need  I just want a screen for testing purposes, and a small screen is actually preferred so that shipping (moving it around with me) costs are low. Do you have any pics of your actual modded units and how much?

The XRGB2+ is incredible. I've tried a lot of devices over the years and this is the only one that did things right. It doesn't try to scale the picture, instead it just doubles the lines (or inserts black scanlines if you prefer) so you get a nice, crisp image. A lot of modern TVs have a problem with 240p signals (they treat it like 480i instead) so passing it through an XRGB beforehand can really help.

You know I actually got to thinking about the PS1 screens earlier today so it's funny you mention that I think I remember seeing you had a couple pics posted somewhere...

This seems like a good idea as, just like you mentioned, they can be found here in the US and are pretty cheap. And they're light and pretty small so they work great for testing purposes!

the PS1 LCD has RGB input capability out of the box. Most people hack it internally, but what is often unknown is the RGB capability is built into the AV port itself. When you hook up a PS1 to a PS1 (sony brand) LCD, it is inputting via RGB which is why the picture always looked so good (Sony was smart and used the best signal possible for the PS1: RGB).

If you take a look at my PS1 LCD, it has a special stand. Inside the stand I built an AV port that was pulled from a broken PS1 system. The PS1 LCD plugs into this port and screws into the stand. Once hooked up I can connect any system with RGB via a DB9 connector. So you can tap RGB without even opening the system up.

This isn't the only screen that does this, but in my opinion this is one of the best screens to use. If you google you can ususally figure out what other screens have RGB input (looks like pcenginesales found  a gamecube one that works).

the Commodore monitors are scare/expensive/horded my C=tards....

and break easy in shipping O_O


see if you can track down an old Nec Multisync capable of RGB .  thats what I use, you can find them locally and in thrift stores and whatnot.

I found one in the trash even.
