Found problem why Turbografx-CD wont spin up!
« on: April 03, 2009, 08:40:36 AM »
Hello,

I have recently gotten back into older consoles and pulled my TG-16 with cdplayer addon out this month and the cd player would not spin up nor will the laser move.... :(

I got on ebay an ordered a Turboduo with sound problems and have been going through threads here lately in order to fix it! I got a good deal on it! Ofcourse the reason why I got the duo is because my cdplayer went out and I had not found any threads for anyone trying to fix em on ones that went "dead".... I decided to break down my player and see if anything visual was wrong with it....The first time I tore it apart I really didnt see much that looked wrong with it...All the caps were good etc! I put it back together and still would not spin up nor would the laser move...I was sitting around bored today and decided to pull it apart again and take a more thorough look at it! I discovered a ground on the main power cable that had come loose (its held on with a peice of aluminum and a sticky glue like residue that allows the circuit to still be completed!) the ground was touching but not much. I pressed it back down and it stayed but soon popped back up...I took a peice of tap and wrapped around it and connected it back into the board....I plugged up my cd player and BAM!!!! My cd and laser both started working!

The heat from the system and the unit being stored away (my case) cause the sticky residue to seperate from the ground and cable....Thus not allowing the top portion of the spindle/laser to become inactive....The unit worked the day I put it in storage a few years later I pull it out (this month) and it just doesnt work.  :-k

So if you come home one day or pull your unit out of storage and it doesnt spin up or the laser doesnt move but it was working before and has not under gone any type of drops, water damage etc. then this could very likely solve your problem!

I hope this is able to help some unfortunate people like myself that have this issue!

WOW THESE PICS ARE HUGE!!!!I EDITED THEM TO MAKE EM SMALLER AND THEY ARE STILL HUGE....CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME AN IDEA TO GET EM TO FIT BETTER?????

For the time being check all the pics out on my Ys Site ---> CLICK!!

100X100
The ground is seperated from the laser and spindle ribbon ground cable..These need to be put back together!

This works I cant say that one day the tape might not come loosed but when you take the main cable your working with look at how its twisted before you take it off....This will play a part in how long it stays together...Personally I just twisted it the other way and it worked alright! Make sure you pay attention to how both cables are inserted in the plastic tabs...

I believe the grounded sticky strip is only there to prevent interference on the cable.

This should not have prevented the unit from powering on.

This should not have prevented the unit from powering on.

If the strip was there to prevent interference and it was almost completely off then that would allow interference with the device which hince would not allow it to work.....AND If you think about it anything that has a ground on it allows the current to be completed! Since the ground was pulled up as shown in the pics then when put back down and taped the system worked....I would say that the ground is something that is a must for the system to work!

If maybe me just simply pulling the system apart and putting it back together made it work all of a sudden well I cant imagine what I would have done cause this is the only thing I messed with!

Another thing that makes me believe this is the issue is because when it was loose the cd would jump when the power was first turned on...SO since the cd jumped that means it started to make a good connection at first but then lost it (IE loose ground) If you know anything about electricity you should know that a ground will prevent something from working.....

By all means if I am wrong then I am wrong BUT I have to disagree with you for the time being! =;

Did you pull it apart to see or have you had it apart in the past? Seems as if your trying to prove me wrong....If this was the case why not put that in your first post...Atleast it wouldnt have look like your just saying it....LOL

I'm glad you got unit working, but to me, it sounds more like the re-seating of the ribbon cable fixed the issue and not the grounding strip. Whatever the case may be, you atleast have a working CDROM unit now  :D

Now if I could only figure out my issue :x

The reason the strip is missing from mine is because I swapped the laser. (My laser doesn't read for crap mind you... and by crap I mean not at all...)

I'm actually a bit jealous that your issue was so simple :?

Well if the strip should still be intact on the original TG-CD Board!

I am wondering what laser did you swap it out with?

There are several ways to get it working again, maybe I could give you some advice! Also did you only swap the laser or did you swap the whole cluster?

Try checking the motor with power to it or hell just take a 9volt battery wrap a wire or solder a wire to each post on the battery then touch them to the motors positive and negative! If it has issues spinning up the motor is bad.

If the ribbon cables were bent to much in the reinstall then you could of broken a wire in the cable itself that is not visible to the human eye..... The laser could be faulty, even though it was replaced it still could be bad and if it was touched or exposed to "shock" it could of messed it up too.

I just order an extra laser off the net for $12.00, I also know a source to get a full replacement drive for $45.00! I will do anything to help just ask!

Goodluck!

My newly acquired PC Engine CD-Rom unit w/interface did not spin when I tested it out.... I was pretty dissappointed given I had already bought it on my trip to Japan

however, after reading this string, I too decided to pop the unit open...  :-s  After tweaking around, the inside of my unit looked pristine... so my engineering brain kicked in and figured the only thing I can really do is figure out which part drives the spinning... I then noticed there are 3 little gears that drivings the spinning motion.

I used one of my fingers to roll the gears... they won't budge but after i kept on trying.. it clicked and rolled with no problems  8-[

seemed like the gears had been stuck due to grease being dried up on it.  excited, I put the parts back together and powered the baby up......

lo and behold now spins!!!  I have been messing with some CD-Rom games and it works!!

so, i guess before we default to a dead laser head being the defect, for non-spin issues, gears can be a cause too - (fyi, symptons for me were:  my drive powered up, said "PC" when I tried to run it, but nothing happened).

I hope this helps some other fellas to get his CD-rom unit to work!!  good luck!!

Make sure you put some sort of lube, white lithium grease of Vaseline, on those gears or they run a good chance of shattering after the next long break from use. If that happens...you are screwed.

You be one lucky sob.  Every unit I've tried that on the gear has crumbled to little bits in my fingers.  heh.
