Help me like Jimmu Densho / Yaksa
« on: May 24, 2009, 06:35:08 AM »
I'm trying really hard to play this game again and feel anything other than hatred for it. I love Space Harrier and ninjas are cool so how is this failing me? Does anyone have any tips to share? It seems like you get hit pretty much all the time, and the platform jumping just seems really clumsy. Am I approaching it with the wrong gung-ho attitude or something?

I beat it.  I enjoyed it.

The best tip I can give you is to change the run setting from "AUTO" to "KEY."

The game has fantastic music and really colourful graphics.

And if I cheat on it by giving myself infinite energy and powerful weapons on a flash card, I actually like playing the game too.

p.s. The game's name is just "Jinmu Densho"; there is no "Yaksa" except in the prototype version.  Does anyone here still call Circus Lido "Chameleon Eyes?"

Old habits die hard and there are still a lot of references to it around the web as Yaksa. I guess it's like calling Ninja Ryukenden > Ninja Gaiden, or The Kung Fu > Drunken Master. The strangely reminds me of the notorious Genpei...

Or the Playstation > "PSX", or Legend of Heroes II > "Dragon Slayer II" or Ys I (dot) II > Ys I & II. :P

Or the Playstation > "PSX"

I really hate that one. It probably came from the school of thought that decides that the letter X immediately makes something sound cool (although Z is a worse offender).

I've found that other than the camera angle, Yaksa (yeah, I said it) has virtually nothing in common with Space Harrier.  That said, I still enjoy it. I still haven't beat it, but I haven't played it in a long time, either.

Space Harrier is a static shoot 'em up that calls for very little strategy, Yaksa is an into-the-screen platformer that requires lots of planning, practice, patience and memorization. Not to mention the gameplay is much more dynamic. My initial attraction to the game was of course it's superficial similarity to Space Harrier, but it became clear within minutes that it was a very different affair.

I think one of the problems is the initial instinct to play it fast like Space Harrier - you really have to approach it from a different angle. After giving it some more time I still dislike the game, but now I understand better why I dislike it.

Yes, that's exactly right.

And it's not for everybody, as you discovered. Space Harrier fans are not going to automatically enjoy Yaksa.
