1000$ is way too low an offer to be considered enough. I know that Thibaut tried to get the original copy from the owner but never managed to do so.

For 1000$ you could fly to her house and beat her into submission and still have enough $$ left over to go get some food!  \o/

To be honest I'm really surprised the owner of the rom hasn't sold it, when they could have thousands of dollars or a game only they can play, I just don't understand it.

If the owner hasn't been offered enough money yet, to get the max amount of money they could do a print run similar to anime4ever's Space Fantasy Zone.
Even with the tiny PCE fanbase for a game like this they'd probably easily sell over a 1000 copies at $50 each.

The problem is that they won't sell those 1000 copies, at least not right away. As soon as a few people get their hands on them, the ROM will get dumped and there will be far less demand for a $50 burn.

Over time, they might sell all 1000 of them. Look at the Sapphire booties for example.

Methinks they just love having something that nobody else has.

I beg to differ. Most collectors would choose a sleek complete repro copy like Sapphire over a plain burned CD they made themselves any day of the week.

The issue is most likely just a question of owning something unique. Something that you know for a fact only maybe a handful of people in the world own, or can ever own. That is the ultimate proposition for a hard core collector. So it is not really an issue of money.

That is why I will never be a hard core collector. I like having something others don't have, but not because they CAN'T have it. I prefer to have things that are under-appreciated rather than unobtainable.

I just like playing good game. The fact that I also have to own them hearkens back to not having the chance to own any of the games or system I lusted for growing up, so there is a psychological component driving my collecting habits.

Older gen gaming would be a lot easier if that were not the fact.

$1000 for a copy is quite generous.  Jamm wasn't looking for the original.

If there is a price that the PC Cocoron owner would agree to (for a rip/copy), we could all contribute to the pot, that is if the number is feasible. It would be crazy and silly, but our purchase would go down in the gaming community history books!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I think part of it is that the owners assume that releasing the ROM makes their prototype worthless. Not usually the case, but if it was, to the seller, selling the original or selling a copy might make little difference.

Let's be honest, most of the community probably just wants the contents of that prototype. Any of us can burn it and make a nice case/cover for it for a couple bucks.

I'm sure there are plenty here (myself included) who would chip in to see this released. I've been reading about this one probably since I joined this forum.

EDIT to add: According to this post from back in 2004, this thing has been eluding us for a long time...

What I want to know is, suppose that her prototype copy stops working one day. Won't the game be pretty much permanently lost to everyone, just because she wanted to keep it for herself ?
