Vampire Story
« on: June 10, 2009, 12:15:33 AM »
Hi!!

As I have just found this forum, I think that the first thing is introducing myself. I have recently discovered the HuC compiler, and now I am testing about new kinds of games that can be done for the PC Engine with this amazing tool.

My first experience was a kiddie game made for my little daughter. In this game, the main character is our dog, and it has to save monkeys falling from their planes. Here are a couple of screenshots:

The title screen:

In game:

This was a practice, but now I have developed a serious game. The game is named Vampire Story, and it is a graphical "point-and-click" adventure. Here are some screenshots:

The title:

An in-game movie:

Another in-game movie:

A screenshot of the game:

Another screenshot:

A dialog in the game:

The game is only a demo: the story is complete but it's very short (you can finish the game in around 5 minutes if you do the correct steps) because my goal was developing a new kind of game.

If a lot of people is interested, I will release a "Deluxe" version with a longer storyline (I have written a very generic code, so it's easy to do this) and even I can take real photos and use voices of many people in the dialogs. As this would be a great effort, and the original purpose of the demo is only educational, in this demo all the voices have been registered by myself, and the images and sprites have been taken from the internet and I have not been very accurate with the design of the sprites.

The game is almost finished, and I hope to upload it somewhere next week. I will post news soon!!

This is pretty interesting.

What did you do to handle sound routines with HuC?  HuC itself has no native sound library.

I don't know if I am understanding your question, as my English is not very good  :(

Both games are CD games, so I use the "cd_playtrk" method to play the background music (the songs are audio tracks of the CD). If I need to play some sound, I have used the ADPCM functions of HuC. I have done this because if you are playing a CD track for the background music, you cannot play another CD track for the sound at the same time.

ahhh gotcha. pretty cool stuff.

if you ever want PSG music in your game, I have an almost finished library for doing that.  I intend to completely finish it when my game is done so everyone can mess around with it too.

There is a demo of what the PSG library can produce on my site!  It's pretty nice so far.

Insanity, the game, will be done by October for sure, which puts it at full completion in <year!

You are going to post a .iso of vampire story?

That looks pretty cool.  I look forward to a future release of a the deluxe version, and I wouldn't mind playing around with the monkey catcher either.

P.S. - How do you get past the title screen of Vampire Story?  My controllers don't have a 'start' button, though they do have a 'run' button.

This does look sweet- and I'm with Necro- I want to play Monkey Catcher too- looks like a real hoot- maybe include it with Vampire Story Deluxe as an unlockable game or bonus?  :)

Arkhan, I look forward to Insanity and your library! I have seen your demo and it sounds cool! It will make things a lot easier to the developers!

I have thought to upload Vampire Story in CUE+ISO+WAV format, I think that it's the better for everybody, isn't it?

Well... I will think about including the monkeys mini game in that hypothetical "Deluxe version". By the way, I love the name "Monkey Catcher"!!  :D

Necromancer, hahaha, you are right. In my past years, I developed games to other plattforms and I have re-used the "Press Start" sprite... and I didn't think in that moment that PC Engine controllers have a "Run" button. I promise to correct it in the Deluxe version!!!

Hahaha, ParanoiaDragon, I think that you have to check the demo first. Maybe after doing that, you will say that Vampire Story is crap, and it's 1000 times better to play "Monkey Catcher"

Being a fan of Point and Click Adventure games, I must say that your game has gotten my attention! Every new PC Engine game that's fun has a buyer in me.

Can I beta test the deluxe version? PLEASE? =P~
