Can't be no worse than Final Fantasy 2 (Japanese version). But seriously, these rom hackers need to take a break from the snes and give the pc engine some serious love!  :-({|=

The Cosmic Fantasy games for sure, and yes, the Dragon Knights too. I agree 100%.

I would like to know what happens in the other Cosmic Fantasy games, but if they are all as mechanically broken as 2, I'm not sure I'd have the patience to play them, even in the best English presentation possible.

Why is 2 broken?

You mean, aside from the various status effects that don't work properly (and the items you can buy to cure the nonexistent status effects), the incredibly minimal variation in damage dealt and received, and the utter lack of enemies being able to do anything to you other than merely attack... The story was great and the graphics were pretty good, but the actual fighting (which is what you spend most of the time playing RPGs doing) was so simple and free of strategy that it was kind of a drag to play. There were so many RPGs which had been doing so much more with the real meat of the gameplay for so long that CF2 was an incredibly big backwards step. If you are going to have to grind to build levels there should at least be some mechanical variety to the grinding to keep you from falling asleep.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking solely about bugs, but also about bad design.

I think the game was unfinished. But who really gives a snot about "strategy" in an RPG... it's all about mowing down the bad guys by any means necessary.

One other thing to point out about CF2 was that it was a System Card 2.0 game. It's one hefty RPG for such limited RAM, we ran into more than enough space issues trying to fit MSR into a Super CD game!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I still have a love/hate relationship with CF2. I feel that status effects in RPGs are rather annoying, so their absence to me is a welcome one. And I enjoy fast paced battles. But, I will take any chance I can get to bitch about the enemy encounter rate. It's so bad that it has to be a programing error. And there is no randomness at all to it. Every few steps, bam(!), battle, every few steps, bam(!), battle etc. The music (and I know I complain about this whenever I talk about CF2) is amazing, but I can never enjoy it on the battlefield because of the stupid non-random battles! The great PC Engine CD tunes reset with every fight thus forcing the player to listen to the same stretch of song over and over. Man, it pisses me off! What a waste.

The NES had lots of great RPGs in limited RAM/ROM space. For the core play experience the early FF and DW games were all relatively small. Sure, you bump up the graphic quality and you lose a good bit of space to graphics storage, but it's not like the PCE lacked code space for a proper combat implementation. The graphics would just require more loading breaks in-between areas, or smaller area designs.

You guys working on MSR aren't industry pros. You can't be expected to produce an RPG that pushes technical boundaries. Commercial developers CAN be expected to do so.

Yeah, but if there really aren't that many means available to you, and the enemies don't have some variety in how the interact with you, that gets old REALLY quickly. Having to use different tricks on different enemies and having enemies do a variety of bad things to you helps keep things interesting. CF2's story worked well. Mechanically it sucked.

I dont even care what gets translated.  In the time it will take for any game to get done, you could just get through it with a dictionary and katakana chart and learn some Japanese while you are at it.

It's not like these f*ckin translations are coming out in rapid fire.

I don't even care what comes out in homebrew.  In the time it will take for a game to get done, you could just program it yourself and learn some coding skills while you are at it.

It's not like these f*ckin' games are coming out in rapid fire.

If it doesn't happen RIGHT NAO!!!, then it doesn't matter.

I'd rather it come right now, kinda soonish, or never.

Halfway and then abandoned for years is lame. lol.

Yet it happens all the time and as soon as you say something about it you get reamed without the lube and what does get translated are games that no one knows about outside of Japan (Lady Sword anyone?). Don't get me wrong, I think its great that we got Ys IV, Xak3 and a few others I can't think of but come on now, there are games we will probably never see a official translation let alone a remake anytime soon. End of rant and like I said before, I really appreciate the hard work for what we got already.
