CALL FOR DEAD DUOS
« on: June 05, 2005, 05:11:27 PM »
Yeah that's right, I'm hot on the trail of the problem with these, specifically with the sound although I might have found a bit of a way to fix CD issues too.

So, if you've got a Turbo or PCE Duo that has faulty soundtrack audio (Redbook audio), this is what I'm most interested in seeing.  Your Duo should meet the following description:

- loads and plays CD games fine
- no music heard, only in game sound effects
- CD drive isn't making loud noises (although these might be good too)
- HuCard music may or may not work too

Really I just need to get my hands on some to test my fix on more units.  In terms of what's in it for you, I can either fix it or I can't.  If you want to unload it if it's not fixable, we can come to an arrangement.  If you want credit towards another system, that's doable too.  If it can be fixed, you pay a nominal fee to be determined.  (like $10 plus shipping it will probably be).

If I do go through with installing a region switch on my Duo and it breaks, then you're sure to play with it ;) .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Sorry, I have one duo that has a burned out laser.  I wish I could get it fixed...

But other than that, everything else, and my other one, works fine.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

Does the CD Spin? On the off chance that it doesn't and you havent tried this, try gently pulling on the laser housing, without actually touching the laser. Worked for my now-functional Duo.

I know.  You'd think that people would be jumping at the chance to get a Duo fixed.

I've also been trying to get my hands on these faulty systems.  I think I know how to fix the CD audio problem as well.  Seems like very few people want to part with broken DUO systems though.

Sorry to squat on D-Lite's thread.  :)

I actually responded to a guy about two weeks ago who wanted to trade a broken system to me as partial credit for a working one.  I just don't have that kind of resource available though (I don't have a large collection of DUOs).  There are people around here with broken systems, but they usually just pop up every once in a while.

D-lite,

My Duo is perfect for the symptoms you describe.  CD's load fine, but the game music doesn't play sometimes or fades in/out.  In game effects sound fine.  I was ready to throw this Duo in the trash.  I know, I know, but I was pissed the damn thing doesn't work so no point in playing all my games with a broken soundtrack.

Better than the trash...I can send it to you to see what you can do with it.  Just let me know where and who to address the package.

Any progress on this?  My Duo's sound just died (it was fine until I tried to play a backup of Dracula X that I created from my own legit copy, thought it was a problem with the backup at first), and I'd be interested in getting it fixed.  Gonna try a local place first though.

I sent mine to D and it was delivered last week Monday.  But I haven't heard anything so I don't know the status.  Must be really busy.  Any update D?

Okay, this is gonna sound SUPER chumpy, but my Duo sound is working right now and that's all that matters. Ready to hear my super-duper fix? Are ya?

I left it on.

So I was getting kinda mad and depressed about the Duo sound problem, although I was a little heartened by the fact that I wasn't alone and that it's a common problem. So I was trying different CD and SCD games in it with no luck, then I put in YsI&II. No sound. I went to do something else, leaving the game running and just looping the intro. After maybe 10 minutes, I heard the CD music swell up. Fully expecting it to fade out again like always, I left it on. Amazingly, the sound didn't go away. In fact, I tried a few other games -- KO Beast, Snatcher Pilot Disk, CD Denjin -- and all of them worked fine, with full sound, from the word go.

I know it's a stupid quick & dirty fix, which can't even really be considered a solution to the problem, but maybe the darn thing just needed to warm up a little. I hadn't used it extensively in a while. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm still looking for a broken system for someone to either sell or volunteer for tests.  I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is in these systems.  If anyone is interested, please PM me.
