Turbo DUO Tap
« on: July 06, 2009, 04:32:56 PM »
Ok guys, I bought a DUO tap off ebay figuring it says duo tap...must be for the turbo duo right? WRONG, It's for using duo controllers on a TG16...So basically I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find the appropriate cables to convert the Big TG16 plug (DIN) to the smaller pc engine/duo plug (MINI DIN) a DIN to mini DIN adapter.

By chance, was it this one?

In any case, the adapters you seek seldom turn up.  As an alternative, you can replace the cable on your tap with one from a donor pad or try your hand at hacking up a cheap extension cord.  See nat's handy dandy guide for instructions, though I don't believe it covers hacking an extension cord, so that route will take a little extra fiddling following controller pin outs.

hahaha yes it was that exact one....I figured those adapters werent too common, but I thought DIN connections were kinda standard (In some computer stuffs anyway) Its not easy to find a DIN to MINI DIN connector for computers that would work? Thats kinda what I was hoping for.

You want a "Female 8-pin DIN to Male 8-pin Mini-Din adapter", correct?

My brain hurts just typing that out.

I made a cursory search and didn't see any commercial adapters out there, but perhaps someone else can find one. I checked "Cables2Go" and stores of that ilk.

It might be easier to simply buy a proper DuoTap and see if someone wants to buy the tap you have. I think the Tap you bought is neat, and if I were you I would hold on to it, but then again I have 3 TurboSticks (why?), so I clearly have issues.

Wow, he Sharpied the word "Reverse" on the Duo Tap box. That is shady business!

Did he do it, or is that the way they came from TZD when they were selling 'em?  :-k

I seem to recall TZD selling both TurboTaps and TurboPads that were rewired from their DUO counterparts.

I know that they sold reverse taps, but did they scribble 'reverse' on the box like the one in the ebay auction link?  Seems pretty low rent if they did; it's not like it would've been hard to print out some semi-professional labels.

That would be unprofessional and lame; I totally agree with you.

Two-cents: I doubt it was standard practice to use Sharpie (since they prided themselves on selling items in "new" or "like new" condition)... maybe one or five slipped out the door, though?

you can make an adapter yourself with minimal effort.... get an 8 pin female DIN (plug the duo tap into it) and 8 pin male MINI-DIN (to jam into your duo) and attach the pins...

radio shack by me has the parts.

I suck at soldering and can manage it!

I might have to resort to that... but first! Does anyone want to trade a PC engine tap or a REAL duo tap? Cmon you know it would be nice to use pc engine controllers on your Turbografx!!!

If you get to where you want to make an adapter, this will help:

http://www.gamesx.com/controldata/turbocont.htm

I dunno how many takers you'll get for folks looking to use Duo Pads on a TG-16.  The Duo Pads are pretty rare and the TG Pads are relatively common.  I think whomever made this Tap was thinking in the wrong direction, heh.  They should have been making a tap that plugs into a Duo and allows TG Pads.  ;-)

In any case - I have several PC Engine 5 player taps.  I can't really trade straight across, as I don't have much use for the one you have, but I'd be willing to use the one you have as credit toward one of the ones I have here.  I sell them for $15 + $5 shipping, and I'd be willing to give you $10 for your existing one, net cost would be ~$10.

You can also find them on ebay for relatively cheap.  Here's one for ~$20:

.....and PC Engine pads (same connector as the TurboDuo) are more plentiful than all the US pads put together.

They should have been making a tap that plugs into a Duo and allows TG Pads.  ;-)

As I recall, TZD made those as well.

Yeah TZD did write in Black magic marker and write Reverse on the box of their rewired taps. I bought one that goes into the duo and converts to TG-16 female ends.
