Going to Maine, Cabin & Relaxin'
« on: July 10, 2009, 11:25:22 PM »
Not camping this time, but staying in a cabin somewhere in the middle of Maine, near the coast, though IIwe are on a lake. Go figure.

Here's the best part: my friends who stayed there last year says they have wifi at the campground's rec center!

I brought books, though, just in case.

8 hours of driving from NJ begins very soon....

Nice, what town/area?

We own vacation property in Maine, near Bath. My mom's side of the family is from Maine, and most everybody still lives there.

I'm back, and it was a blast. I saw a friggin' bald eagle flying over the lake and land in its nest whilst I was kayaking. That was friggin' awesome. Of course, I was convinced that my friend didn't know what she was talking about and I said, "That's a turkey vulture, not an eagle..."

I was wrong. She was right.

Word up, I remember you mentioned this in the past. I was in the Damariscotta area (Lake Pemaquid) mostly, but spent a lot of time at Pemaquid Point and Boothbay Harbor, too.

Biking on the peninsula roads (the nicely paved ones, at least) was a treat! There were some poorly maintained roads, but thankfully the views more than compensated for it. I never used those biking shoes that click into the pedals, so it was funny to see me dismounting to ask for directions (yes, I got lost at a certain point...one of the roads totally lacked a sign and I missed it, thinking it was a trivial service road).

Thank goodness there was a decent supermarket with stuff for vegetarians up here. I skewered tofu, soy dogs, veggie burgers and onion rings on our (bon)fires. Yes, dinner turned into blackened chunks of charcoal rather quickly. I still loved dinner, but I don't recommend it my method of cooking to anyone.

Sweet, Damariscotta is a nice area. That's up Highway 1 a bit from our place. You picked a great time of year to go, although family members are telling me it's been raining like crazy over there the past couple weeks.
