WTB: Turbo Duo (US)
« on: July 20, 2009, 06:47:31 AM »
Hello to all,

As many of you may know my first customers system that I got was a US Turbo Duo! He had no sound and wanted me to do a Region Mod and RGB mod....

I did a cap replacement, tested it several times and everything was workign perfect! Then I performed the region mod and when I hooked it all up to test the system would either show a grey, green, red, black etc. colored screen.

I made a trip to dallas to see Zeons buddy, Raymond with all this fancy equipment and a shit ton of Arcade PCB's! Raymond determined that it most likely was not my fault for what happened, and after 4 hours of testing narrowed it down to one or all of the Hu Chips. 2 days ago I finally swapped the chips from another PCB I got from blackandblue. Hooked it all up and still got the multi colored screens, the colors were different tho, brown, green with black static, red with white, and more. I thought to myself I must be getting somewhere! I recheck all the connections and got a different response,  :-k even closer? or f*cking it up worse I asked myself.....

I recheck all the legs again and got the same response, that time tho I noticed the hu6280 was sparking, one of the legs shorted or something. I replaced that chip with the Turbo Express I got from ??? cant remember at the moment.

I got a different response this time, mainly a black screen....after apply a small amount of pressure to the different chips I noticed the 6260 would static the screen, so back to the workbench....Everything looked good on it, but I replaced it with one from the TE. same response again.

I replace the systemcard chip and still same response, so basically what Im saying is Im baffled beyond belief of actually getting this system working, I even started pulling chips from my working duo and putting them on it one by one testing after each one and still nothing. ](*,) ](*,)

If anyone has a US Duo console only that maybe has a sound issue or laser issue that I could buy up at a good price and fix it with parts from his (hopefully) or just one that works good that would be kick ass!  He is a collector and this is a duo from his personal collection is good condition CIB!

I was gonna buy him a DUO-R until he gave me this bit of news...so if I can find a PCB to just completley swap out for his that would be AWESOME!

Override,

I just bought another US version DUO system that works beautiful. Thinking about selling my broken duo system that i wanted you to fix (has sound problem, laser reading problem, Missing cover).

PM and offer thanks.

This sounds like a botched region mod to me. Is this the first system you've region modded? The reason I ask is that there are two sets of instructions out there for the region mod and one of them is incorrect. A botched region mod will power up with random multi colored screens.

No this was not the first I have performed, I originally followed directions by Duo_R on here.....Its multiple chips that have gone out, I put the system card and two other chips from that pcb on my PCE and I get the same responses....I can only assume the system had a power surge from one of the times I was testing it....Im puzzled tho.

Sorry my chip didn't work for you.  Did you try removing the region mod?  Maybe one of the ICs are f*cked up and aren't switching the pins?  I can see something like that happening if only 4 of the 8 pins were switched on the huey.  Time to run some continuity tests.
Another douche trying to obtain a full Turbo collection.  119/146 so far.  Got a long way to go. Half way there. Hit the 100 mark. ich bein ein obeyer

Are region mod's easily undone?  I thought some of the pins were cut or removed.  If so, would simply wiring them back do the trick?  The reason I ask is because I have the PCE Flash Cart, but no matter what it doesn't work on the region modded PC-E.  But hey, that 's what I have a TG-16 for.

Actually the complete hu slot has been removed, which would cancel out anything wrong with it! It has to be more than one dead IC on the PCB! I have replaced several with no results. I dont want to completely trash my good system to only fail to get this one going. I think its just best to say I tried and have given up before I pull my hair out or just randomly knock someone on the floor, from frustration, cause they smiled at me wrong.

Sure they are, just unsolder all the bottom wires on the PCB, then (if they didnt remove the bottom loose pins on the PCB) unsolder the bottom 8 pins on the PCB and take them out. then take your wires from the top pins and cut them to length and solder them in the 8 holes on the PCB, bam your back in business!

Yeah, I did the region mod on that console.  It could be undone, but not sure why the flash cart is having issues with it.  I'll PM you so we dont take over override's thread :)

I still say it's far more likely this is a region mod f*cking up (like BlackandBlue suggested, this is what happens when only some of the pins are getting switched), as opposed to actual "bad" chips on the PCB.

With not hu slot on the system whatsoever and it still not working then there is NO way this could be a region mod f*ckup....

Not to mention I have spent days upon days soldering and resoldering things, after the RM didnt work the first time I took it all off, re did the switch and rewired, I assure that the RM was wired correctly!

Not to mention the few chips that were suspected that I took off of the system and put on a working duo, it caused the system to have the same response as the other one. Its a matter of getting all the chips that are messed up replaced.

If anything, if Wmac allows me to buy the spare duo he has and I can get the system working on that board, then I will be willing to send you the one Im having so many issues with! Maybe your knowledge can get it going.....

OK, well I'd be interested to hear the resolution of this when you figure it out. Unfortunately, I have little time to tinker with these things myself anymore but hearing about your exploits will be beneficial to people in the future.

Override, I feel your pain, it's a mod'ers worst nightmare.  I am scared to death when I'm working on someone else's stuff that something's gonna go wrong.  My own stuff, I don't mind toying with, but someone else's makes me nervous as hell.  Best of luck to ya.
