The differences in Duo consoles.
« on: September 02, 2009, 09:37:16 PM »
Being my first post, I am hoping that I get away with some common question and don't ge the search police (if this board has them) after me.
I'd like to know what all the different Retail packages for the Turbo Duo were. I have seen pictures of Duos with different colors and read about systems with pack ins.

I bought mine from Turbo Zone Direct as new old stock for $300 (or was it $400?) in the early part of the decade.  I had bought a broken TG-16 with the CD attatchment in 99 that kept taunting me to play it pile of games it came with. I had to get something to play the many games I got with it! So I searched through some very old EGM magazines I had from the early to mid 90s and started calling all the old game shops listed in the clasifieds in the back. Eventually I found TZD and bought the Duo.

Mine has a Silver/grey box with a small pictures of what must have been Air Zonk on it. I still have that box laying around somewhere come to think of it. The system is all black. I've seen other Duo that are more charcoal with a green power switch and a purple CD door button with Duo written in purple. What's the difference?

Maybe a sticky could be put together to explain all the known retail configurations and what they included with photos for the TG-16 and DUO. Much like my usual internet hangout, RX7Club.com, has a sticky for the FC saying what each year of it came with and all the changes that occured.
I could search, but there's no discussion in that!

I don't have a definitive answer because I haven't possessed many TurboDuos, but I can tell you this:

1. That silver-gray box is THE box that TTi used. As far as I know, there were no variations to the actual box itself (i.e. package art, colors, screenshots used, etc.).
2. That said, on many boxes (most likely intended for retail stores) an additional graphic was applied to the the right-hand side of the face* of the box declaring "this box contains", basically advertising all the pack-ins and stuff.
3. It would be interesting to see if there are any variations with this add-on graphic (I never really paid attention).

* I can't recall if the graphic wrapped around, but it might have.

I think the only variations on color are the Japanese versions of the console like the Duo-R and RX, but I am not sure.

As for packins... I have owned 2 Turbo Duos when I got my first one in 92 It came with 2 pack in discs. Ys 1-2 and the Gate of Thunder CD. When TZD released that Warehouse stock (my second duo... I hate myself for selling my original for a Playstation in 95) They took out the Pack ins.

I sure hope you bought them seperately as they are fantastic games.

Hope this helps. I am Brand new here too :)

Jeremy, first off welcome aboard!

As SaturdayMorningRobots has mentioned Japanese consoles being the variations he is correct in a sense...

The TurboDuo is from teh US:

The PC Engine Duo is from JP:

Then you also have the PCE Duo-R:

The PCE Duo-RX:

and Last but not least the PC-FX: (To make Necro happy,, the below pictured console was infact a "Next Gen" 32-Bit Console, it infact is NOT compatible with any of the Turbografx, Duo, PCE software) Still worth mentioning IMO!!

You also have many varations of the Turbografx with CD-Addon unit such as the one you mentioned you got in '99...They were all Japan release systems...The include but are not limited to the Supergrafx, Coregrafx, Coregrafx II and the ever so famous Briefcase Unit!

Hope this info helps you out....You can also search the many, many threads posted on this site! Im sure you can find answers almost anywhere, OR try out the chat, its a great way to access people immediatly that are on and well basically have fun and just talk and bullshit with each other.

Disclaimer: All pictures actively taken from google.com search engines, credit for pictures goes out to whom evers they are!

You can also see the systems and compatibility of each here.  It may not be directly on the forum but it is on this website.

This is true for retail boxes, though if I recall correctly, TZD shipped new Duos in plain cardboard boxes toward the end.

2. That said, on many boxes (most likely intended for retail stores) an additional graphic was applied to the the right-hand side of the face* of the box declaring "this box contains", basically advertising all the pack-ins and stuff.

It did wrap all the way around the box.  Reach around, Turbo style!

and Last but not least the PC-FX:

Don't f*ck with peoples minds.  That's an entirely different console, not a variation.  :-"

Oh well, Im sorry, I consider it in the class of PCE stuff, even though it was released as a "next gen console" to compete with the 32 bit genre. I guess it would have helped to state that info, being that its not backward compatible.

Well, that explains why my DUO had none of the great pack ins I saw mentioned on wikipedia! TDZ sniped them out of my box! That kind of clears up alot of confusion for me.

I recently got my TG-16 w/CD attatchment working. I had a screwed up controller port where the control plug broke off in the systems port!  just need to find a system card for the CD rom drive. I can't remember if I got one with it. I bought it off AOL classified for like $100 with all those games. I'll have a well working DUO and TG-16 CD system.

Hey override... ya forgot the LaserActive w/ NEC PAC-N10.  ;-)

I just got a PAC-N1 in the other day... gonna region mod it... have a nice push button switch on the front.  It'll be sweet for someone, as these things can't take any of the usual region converters.  ;-)

AFAIK there is only one US Duo, and one retail package. I think the HuCard that came with them might have varied from box to box (I got Ninja Spirit) but that's it. The purple/blue buttons were only on the original JP Duos, but images of that version were used in US magazines here and there.

When TZD was released from their warrantee contract and started selling the systems again they took out the games.

BTW, the "search police" are rather low key around here since the search function itself is terrible, like most forums, and we all know it. :)

When I did TZD's upgrade offer in 1996 or so, the Duo i received was shrinkwrapped, had the band around it about the free games inside, and my free Hu-card was Splatterhouse. I already owned Spaltterhouse, so I left it shrinkwrapped, and I think it's still sitting inside my Duo box.

The trade-in program, I forget the exact details concerning that. I know I had to trade in a fully functioning Turbo Grafx 16, with all the hook-ups (RF, AC, and 1 controller). I pay shipping for the Grafx going to them, and the Duo coming to me, and sent them $50, maybe $100, I'm pretty sure the total, plus all the shipping, was under $200. In exchange they sent me a Duo.

I recall asking the guy at TZD what they did with the Turbo Grafx systems they received in exchange. I think he said they were then donated to orphanages, or something similar. Tax write-off stuff I guess.

That's neat, never knew about that. I didn't keep many flyers from TZD, but I'm sure we'll find the details in one of them.

It's sort of an extension of this TTi DUO trade-in program that accepted Nintendo and Sega consoles, $50 for 16-bit trade-ins, $30 for 8-bitters... of course this was in late 1992/early 1993 :)

That sounds like the trade-in i went for, however, I'm pretty sure I didn't pay $249.99 for my trade-in. I'm thinking it could have been $100-$149.99. I don't have the receipt from that package nearby. I'm actually not sure if I still have that TZD transaction's receipt/packign list, and if I did if it listed the $ amount on it. I have the original TZD branded box the system was packed in, I could have toseed it in there with the Duo.
