Sears catalog Turbo ads
« on: November 20, 2009, 11:33:17 AM »
Happen to catch a post on another forum that had a link to some old Sears catalog pages for old videogames.  I did a little looking and found the Turbo ones.  Here they are for your viewing pleasure:

TurboExpress and TurboVision:

Turbografx, TurboCD, games and accesories:

Duo, TG-16 and more games:
All is well. :)

$70.00 for R-Type Hucard? Whoa!  I remember only paying around $29.00 at Toys-R-Us. Hefty prices on all those games though.  :-s

During TG-16's first year (at least), R-Type's price tag stayed in the $60+ range at Toys-R-Us and other retailers. It was totally crazy. :)

In past threads, we have discussed a "standard" pricing strategy for HuCards based on tiers: 2 Megabit, 4 Megabit, etc. etc.

If this pricing strategy is even remotely accurate, then it makes the pricing of R-Type seem much less arbitrary than it did back in the day.

If you look through the old EB catalogs, for example, you'll see that a lot of HuCards were high ($55+) when they debuted. I don't know how long EB waited before they dropped prices, but, damn, imagine paying $56 for Darkwing Duck or Night Creatures. That would have been painful.

You can never have too many Gates.

It was spelled "Gates" in many places before and after it came out and it tripped me up for years like many game misspellings and misinterpretations. It didn't help that LoT later came out as "Lords" and not "Lord of Thunder". It makes as much sense, since the hero and bosses aren't all thunder or lightning users.

I really want that TG-16 so I can play that TG-CD system card, but did anyone notice that the TG-16 hooked up to the TG-CD is region modded?  It must be, since it has a PCE system card jammed in its slot.

Indeed.  Don't you just love it when people bitch about modern games being too expensive?  The $50 price tag found on many of these games is equal to about $85 today.
