You can disregard my previous questions about the Sony Discmen.  I went ahead and bought one of the new KSS-220a from the Ebay link BlackandBlue posted.  Now I just hope that once it arrives I can manage to follow the guide on here and not break anything, and that replacing the laser does indeed fix the problem and make my CD drive as good as new.

Just go slow and read the guide over before starting.  It really isnt that bad, just a ton of screws to keep track of.  The only soldering is to remove the jumper on the new laser unit.  Just dont melt the ribbon cable!  I tried to make it as friendly as possible.
