I think he must have been joking. Video rentals stores are doing very badly these days, and its only going to get a lot worse. Between cable/satellite, Netflix/Hulu, and iTunes I really don't understand why anyone would rent a movie from a store at all, especially on DVD since you can own it for keeps for usually less than $15...and it won't be scratched to hell.
I really really miss the days of home video as a premium item, but these days its treated more like a public utility so I wouldn't invest anything into it.
Whatever the best career for you is, it isn't what people will tell you it is. Whatever they are telling you is the same thing they are telling everyone else. These days of course everyone looking for a career change is supposed to study to be a pharmacy tech. In three years though the PT market will be as overcrowded as the IT market is today.
