Some newbie questions

I've been looking at TG16/Duo games for a while now, and as you know the Turbo CD and Turbo Duo are quite expensive. I'm wondering if I would be missing out on if I simply decided to go with a regular TG16 unit(other than Castlevania).

well as long as you don't care for CD/SCD titles then you will be fine...
though there are fair number of good titles on that format...

I'd say there are plenty of great games on hucards to keep you happy for awhile but once you've played them quite a bit and you want something different there are plenty of great cd games as well. The ones I can think of at the moment(besides dracula x) are: Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder,Forgotten Worlds ,Ys book 1 and 2,Ys 3,Cosmic Fantasy 2,Dungeon Explorer.

These games generally cost more than hucards but you have the money a lot of them are worth it. If you already have a regular turbo grafx i'd recommend getting a pc engine duo since they play everything but the games you can play on your Turbo Grafx. However if you're just getting into the system and you don't have a ton of cash to spend the regular turbo grafx will provide you with plenty of good games.

The best games are all on CD, don't bother with a plain TG16.  You'll play through the handful of good hucard games and have to buy a Duo anyway later on down the line so save yourself the trouble.

The problem with most Hucard games is that they don't hold up well, they're like old NES games in that if you don't have the nostalgia factor associated with them then they're so archaic they're not fun.  CD and SCD games on the other hand are much better and I'm finding new ones all the time that are great, while I haven't found a new Hucard game in years that didn't suck ass.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll just go with the TG16 for now. I'm not much into RPGs, so I don't think I'm passing over anything great. But I do wish Konami would port Dracula X to another console....

Gate of Thunder, Lord of Thunder, Forgotten Worlds, Shape Shifter, Dungeon Explorer II, Beyond Shadowgate , Last Alert, The Valis Series, (thats the US titles not counting the great PRG's)

Imports Dracula X, Shubibinman3, and more Fighting games and shooters than you can shake a stick at, Asuka 120%, Flash Hiders, Spriggan, Spriggan Mark 2    ....oh gods it goes on and on

Oh your missing something without a cd, You are also saving yourself money in the long run by going Duo, you have no need for system cards and the added expense of the CD player itself.....thats not saying you aren't still getting the chance to play great games....The Soldier series of shmups, Blazing Lazers, Legendary Axe series, Dungeon Explorer, Bonk games, Air Zonk Cadash   ...oh hell I guess its still goes on and on.....man I LOVE this system :)

Ahhhh, GUTS you have no love for old crusty games! :D

Anyway, to get back to the original question: if you don't like the 8-bit / 16-bit eras of gaming, then you may not enjoy most of the games in the HuCard -- or CD -- libraries.

Personally, I think GUTS is too harsh: HuCards still offer good times to folks who are willing to give them a chance.  Most folks will tell you that the CD games are not to be missed -- and they're right, there are tons of awesome CD titles.  However, since you don't want to take the financial plunge (yet!) to get a DUO/TG-CD, I would totally encourage you to pick up a cheap TG-16 and some A-list HuCards.

The HuCard games are great, ignore what GUTS said. However the games are just even better on the CD/SCD/ACD format. I definately recommend buying a PCE+CD/PCE Duo system (for Duos, specifically Duo R model) and a Turbo Grafx 16 or maybe even a Turbo Express.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Here are a list of domestic and Import titles reguardless of genre that are great Hu-Card games. I am sure people can add to this list.

Bonk's Revenge
Cadash
Legendary Axe
Legendary Axe II
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Bomberman '93-'94
Air Zonk
New Adventure Island
Legend of Hero Tonma
Blazing Lazers
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier
Final Soldier
Dungeon Explorer
Ninja Spirits
Shockman
Magical Chase
Final Lap Twin

Now most of those are domestic, because I haven't imported many card games. But there are many more great titles out there. So weather you go base Turbo or with the Duo you WILL enjoy the Turbo experience and I think we will all agree with that.

On a side note, I make no comment on actually get a hold of any of these titles. Some are easy....but then there is Magical Chase. That is a very nice list of games that rock. There are a ton of others

That's just from my experience, I even had nostalgia on my side and I can't stand old crap like Ninja Spirit and Legendary Axe anymore.  I can play Genesis and SNES all day long, but something about HuCards just hasn't aged very well in my opinion.  The CD games on the other hand have aged very well.

A really fun dodgeball game for PCE HuCard that no one seems to talk about is Dodge Danpei. It's like a dodgeball game such as the Super Dodgeball series with Kunio-Kun, except with some RPG elements. It's really fun and can be played with two players also. I highly recommend.

Don't forget Neutopia and Neutopia II! :D Two of the best HuCards there are. :)
