I was thinking about how you can do an R-Type movie while driving to work this morning. Here is my overview for a great cheesy action flick:
The movie opens with an epic space battle (set to the backdrop of level 1). The viewer is seeing things from the side of the defenders...the Bydo army. You hear their calls ordering for ships to launch and missiles to track their targets. As the battle progresses, the R9 fighters are gradually blasting their way into the Bydo territory. A Bydo general commands that things are desperate, they must release the ‘beast’. What appears to be a Bydo scientist begs him not to, explaining that this ‘beast’ was not created for war, it’s just like a child and does not know how to control itself. Clearly, the scientist has a strong personal connection to this ‘beast’ but the general refuses to listen.
Great doors open and the beast (level 1 boss) is revealed. The battle is getting close, the beast is clearly distressed. The scientist, huddled in despair begs to himself that his ‘child’ should not be afraid. Then, two R9 fighters break through the defensive barrier and head for the beast. Scared, it lashes out with it’s tail, wailing in fear. But the fighters manoeuvre skillfully and blast the beast with powerful lasers. The final moments of the beast are played out to make the audience feel sad for the monster.
Then the camera zooms into the cockpit of the blue R9, the first time we see a human so far. He is cheering and giving it the usual heroic stuff, while the other pilot in the green R9 follows suit. Behind them the defensive barrier that the Bydo have constructed is boxing them in. They cannot go back, and have to blast their way through the walls where the beast was.
After some flying time, they come out onto a vast, dark wasteland (level 2). They land their ships and introduce themselves. The pilot of the blue R9 is Kyle. The green R9 is piloted by Randall, with Eve acting as the gunner. Some chit chat ensues, they explore their surroundings a little, when suddenly biological pipe-like structures suck them down into the ground. Much confusion occurs and eventually they are expelled onto a massive mound (level 2 boss). Seeing it is alive, they shoot it in the eye with their guns, but a semi-mechanical snake like creature attacks and they tumble off the thing and run for their lives.
Going through a network of pipe-like caves, they discover a bizarre scene. A whole city stands ahead of them (level 3) with green searchlights shooting across the sky. While exploring, they are struck and fall unconscious.
When they awake, they find they are in the presence of a group of Bydo! But these do not want to kill them. The Bydo explains that they are an underground movement. The Bydo are sort of like a hive mind, but they do not share thoughts with each other - instead, Bydo (the main man) can send influence out to all the people. But some had discovered by chance a drug that cut this link and they enjoyed the freedom that gave them. But the drug is very rare and expensive to make. They are sick of the hold that Bydo has over them and urge the humans to kill Bydo to cut the link permanently. The humans say they can’t get back to their ships, but the Bydo know where their ships now are. They have automated mecha that cleans the whole of the Bydo Planet (which is less a planet, more a fast, mobile world which has been built around so much it almost looks like a huge city in space). They escort the humans out of the city and into the garbage lands where their ships would have been dropped.
Another action scene ensues where the humans are jumping from moving platforms (much like in Attack of the Clones) as they navigate the massive garbage area (level 6). A love interest begins to develop between Eve and Kyle, something Randall is a little moody about (Hollywood likes that kind of thing). At the end they find their ships and take off, Eve now choosing to fly with Kyle in the blue R9.
They speed over the land (in actuality they are moving closer and closer to the Bydo planet core) and see up ahead something that blocks their entrance to the Bydo core. It’s an enormous battleship patrolling the area (level 3). The big action finale is them agianst the battleship. They destroy it and move into the core.
There they finally face Bydo (final level). But Bydo uses his psychic powers to influence Randall. Bydo’s words are spoken through him. He says that human are a danger to the Bydo, how they spread and destroy. Bydo has to defend itself against the humans. Randall attacks and there is a tense dogfight between the two ships. Randall knocks out Kyle and Eve’s weapon system. Kyle is forced to ram Randall and sends him crashing into the transparent egg sac that protects Bydo. It splits and gas flows out.
Kyle and Eve think they have won, but Bydo’s voice booms out that they have lost. Already they see little semi-organic robots fixing the rupture. And behind them, in the dark tunnel, there are signs of a vast amount of movement heading for them. Kyle and Eve exchange some brief words. Then Kyle sets the ship to reactor overload and flies full speed straight for the rip in Bydo’s egg. Reaching it before it is fixed, the ship plunges into Bydo’s body and explodes, destroying him.
Outside, the Bydo forces suddenly seem to give up, some falling from the sky. There are great celebrations, the humans have won. They send their forces in, gunning through the lands. In the Bydo City, the people are rejoicing they are free, but the humans plough through, shooting and destroying everything, including the Bydo families who are just enemies in their eyes. This being the now fairly common anti-war theme of the movie.
The movie ends with an arty shot of something that hints at hope in the future, or at the very least, a sequel.
