I always wondered about the photo on the box. Why is he putting in the CD upside down? Also, why won't his CD door open all the way? And why is the CD unit so much bigger than the Turbo? What a strange universe this is. We shall never know the full story behind this photograph.

I guess the easy answer is to make some educated guesses like: CD tech was still pretty new and the photographer knew shit about it.  The CD unit is closed/opened so you can see it all, just so you know how AWESOME it is, and the CD unit is also  bigger so you know just how AWESOME it is. 

It would be cool to know the history on the branding though. - begin the hunt!

The Fun answer is something like the CD isn't upside down the unit is, NEC thought Mericans liked everything really bigger, and the CD won't open all the way because Zach's hair gel got stuck in the door.

Maybe they wanted you to admire the beauty of the shiny silver side of the disc or what turboswim said.

Also, why won't his CD door open all the way?

To get a full view of it topside in the shot, probably ??

And why is the CD unit so much bigger than the Turbo?

Cereal box type marketing enlargement I suppose. Additional rationale for enlargement would be to place more emphasis on what's actually inside the box over the base unit also depicted which was sold separately.

The guy taking the photo was a LD fan and just thought it looked proper. Or it IS a LD and Andre the Giant was holding it, then PhotoStyler-ed the two images...or even better, it was the proto for the LD addon for the TG.

If they did use a real disc, it would forever be on the box. They could have used Ys and that would be fine, but if they took the shot with a turd like Fighting Street...
