I don't get why the converters from Japan to USA are so expensive on ebay. It's like 3X cheaper to just region mod.

It's a shame there is no more make an offer.  I was going to offer 4.95 since because of the price sticker on the cover.

Good ol' hit-japan.

Used Rainbow Islands, no spine, no card $180:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RAINBOW-ISLANDS-Mint-Condition-PC-Engine-CD-PCE-Grafx-Import-JAPAN-Game-pe-/311152559403

The only recent eBay sale of the game (lots of listings, few sales due to inflated asking prices) in the same level of completeness $43:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-CD-Rom-RAINBOW-ISLANDS-Japan-0328A22-/311341402815?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item487d64cabf

Currently available on eBay, complete with spine. BIN $74:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-CD-ROM-RAINBOW-ISLAND-JAPAN-GAME-Clean-Work-fully-13333/181794227541?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3Dcce78ad5f47845eb970fd8665b81cafb%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D311341402815

Of course, he has hundreds of listings like this. This is the same guy asking $2800 for Darius Alpha missing the foam:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DARIUS-ALPHA-Mint-Condition-PC-Engine-Hu-PCE-Grafx-Import-JAPAN-Game-2801-pe-/301420841153

When the last one sold for $999 with the foam:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTRA-RARE-NEC-PC-Engine-Darius-Alpha-Supergrafx-Turbografx-in-US-/311362944098?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item487ead7c62

For an extra $1800, the a$$hole can't be bothered to at least pull the foam from a $5 game and include it in the $2800 game.

(s)hit Japan should be inducted into the gougers hall of shame.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.

You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I love the usage of a stock photo for a game that the guy wants that much money for.  Yeah, sure buddy.  Don't even bother taking a picture of something you expect me to pay ~$200 for.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

He will lose case if someone buys that.  "Does not match photo" is a valid reason especially since the stock photo is the box and the listing is without the box.

If I had $200 that I could part with for a couple weeks, I would have bought that, filed claim, sent it back in very crappy packing and made sure the manual and stuff got wet.

You mean sold Super Air Zonk for $980. Or did a bidding war break out between several people who came upon it at the same time and it went for $2000?
