RAU-30 stopped working (bought recently NIB)
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:32:47 AM »
Hi Guys, wonder if any of you have come across this problem or would be kind enough to offer any advice?

I've got an RAU-30 Supergrafx CD ROM adaptor which I use to hook up my PC Engine LT to a Super CD ROM2. I have also used it with the standard PC Engine, just to test it out and it worked fine when I bought it in April, brand new in box.
The adaptor has suddenly stopped working, no video or audio from the Super CD Rom and no disc spinning when I boot up.

All other hardware works fine ie PC Engine hooked up to Super CD ROM2 direct. So the adaptor has bust. Checked all connections, opened her up, cleaned up a little brown sticky stuff on the board but didn't see any signs of anything blowing. All wires look perfectly intact.

What could have stopped it working? It is possible that at some point I put 12V into the PC Engine instead of 9V during all the wire changes between the LT, SCDR2 and PCE and that grey patch lead, but no damage has been done to the PCE.

Thanks...
Systems: PCE white, Core Grafx, CD Rom2 / IFU30, GT, LT, Super CD Rom2. Games: Almost all the shooters and about 50 others and growing! Also into Sega Saturn and Dreamcast shooters.

First thing I would do is open your RAU-30 up, pull out a multi meter, and measure the voltage coming into it. If there's no voltage inside the unit, whatever is connected to it is faulty, not the RAU. If voltage comes into the board, but doesn't get distributed, look for any fuses. Its possible you over-volted it with 12v instead of 9v, but if I were to guess, only a fuse would pop and not cause any significant damage.
