Creating a TurboGrafx-16 book (need help)
« on: August 27, 2010, 03:16:48 PM »
Hello to all!

Yes as you can see I'm new to the forum, I've been trying to get on this forum for some time now I just got added to the rosters today. I've been a huge TG16 fan since 1990. I got rid of my whole collection of TG stuff and as of a couple weeks ago have decided to start buying it all up again. My ultimate goal is to create a fanzine/book on TG16 US region only, to feature every game released Stateside. Now I was expecting to find what I needed to get the duty done with no problem but... there's a problem.
I need scans of every game instruction cover and HuCard/CD.

Please don't take this post as me begging because that's not the case, if you don't want to help me with this that's okay. If you want to help that would be great. My original plan was just to buy every game out there so I can accomplish this project and I still plan on doing that even if I get help on this project. I don't have enough income to purchase all the games in the short amount of time that I was hoping to have all the layout of the book finished. In the past 2 weeks I've spent somewhere near $200 on TG stuff and my wife would kill me if she ever found out.

I will release the book as a download as with putting it on lulu.com for purchase at $0.00 commission. I'm not looking to make any money off of this. I just need a project because I'm bored. My last big project was "Card Fighter Project" where I took the SNK vs Capcom Card Fighter Clash game turned it into a TCG. you can get more details about the last project by just searching Card Fighter Project it was quite well received by those interested in the SvC CFG games. My site that I hosted all the cards at is no longer running I got tired of paying for hosting since I made no money from that project either.

Down the road I may even ask if there are any writers that would want to help with this. I have not decided that yet or not.

If you would like to help great! Just send me a PM and I'll give you my email address to send the raw scans to. If not thanks for reading this anyway.

Hey, I remember you...sorta. Glad to see another member who loves like Neo Geo Pocket like I do.

As for the book idea, now that its all said and done, and the Turbo/PCE/NEC has given us all it will ever give us, and all regions are basically the same (ie: the eBay region) it seems more apparent to me than ever that the US version of the PC Engine, the "Turbografx 16" as it was known, was really just a bizarre speed bump in the grand scheme of PC Engine-dom. The fact that there ever was a localized PC Engine was...a fluke, nothing more. While a lot of people consider PCE stuff "foreign" or something "out there" the reality is, in the grand scheme of things, the US stuff is the anomaly, not the the way around.

Therefore I think the idea of a book that gives us in depth criticism of Camp California and Darkwing Duck, but completely ignores Dracula X, Street Fighter II', Sapphire, Bomberman '94, etc etc just because the boneheads that ran NEC/TTI couldn't make it work, is also a bit randomly myopic.

Of course the crap US library is just what makes such a book possible. Reviewing every PCE game would be extremely hard to do. Also, kind of pointless, since there at least 100 PCE games that don't really deserve any kind of comment.

So...knock yourself out, I guess, but it seems like a fractured subject matter that ignores 3/4 of the total PCE scene.

Well, it may initially ignore 3/4 of the scene but I guess thats what sequels were made for hehe

Originally I was doing a Genesis book that included Gen/CD/32X. I got 20 pages into it and decided... "I've bitten off more than I can chew!"
The Gen library was too large and I figured I would have to break that one up into volumes if I ever wanted to complete it the way I originally envisioned it. I started thinking, "What are my favorite video game consoles out there? Neo-Geo and TurboGrafx-16" I would have done the Neo-Geo book but at this point in time I'd rather spend my time on the TG16 since I'm more into that. I was thinking about doing honorable mentions for games outside of the US but I've not decided on that. I may just do a PC Engine book as well depending on how well this one goes.
Since I'm basically doing it on my own it's going to take some time. I'm thinking about pulling my brothers into helping if they are interested just because one of them is very artistic and the other is great with words. I'm a graphic designer so if I can get them on board it will be that much better. If not I can handle it myself it will just take longer.

For gods sake, please never try to start something similar about the japanese PC Engine then ;)
www.pcedaisakusen.net
the home of your individual PC Engine collection!!
PCE Games coundown: 690/737 (47 to go or 93.6% clear)
PCE Shmups countdown: 111/111 (all clear!!)
Sega does what Nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together!^^

I think I'd love to help. sent PM.  I agree with Zeta, it's a good idea to at least take a chunk (say 10 pages) and go over the imports.  Even if only going over the major titles released in japan only.

Sure I've sent you a PM back.
But I'm still trying to get ideas as to how to present this. More of a modern look or keep it retro. I've been playing with the layout just to see how it might work.

Well I think I may have locked down a design. I'm going to finish the mock-up before I start to do the actual page layout to makes sure I don't have to do too much correction later. I figure I'll worry about getting the pictures I need later as I'm putting it all together and eventually I can get what I need. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have a access to the HuCards and Covers of the manuals because I still need many more of them. I have 5 games basically down at the PO waiting for me and 3 more possibly 6 more, if I win these other 3 auctions, on the way.

Right now I just need help with getting the scans for all the manuals and hucards/cds. But I will definetly ask for more help down the line if needed. Right now I want to finish the mock-up. Hopefully tomorrow I can put the whole day into that since I don't have to work.

Yeah only doing TG16 right now. If you have any TG then let me know because I need most of the games still. I just won another 2 games from ebay and have 3 coming from a member of the forum and those 5 games sitting down at the post office just waiting to get to me on Tuesday. Plus the ones I have already scanned.
