I'm sorry but Deep Blue still sucks
« on: September 19, 2010, 03:56:54 AM »
I know this is old news but I recent replayed this game again after seeing Spida1a's review on it just to see if the game is really that bad and hard. Sadly the game is just as awful as I remember it with weak power ups, over powered enemies, and the avoiding everything is nearly impossible with the game's default speed. I remember beating it when I was younger but only by cheating with a Turbo Stick's slo-mo but I can't see how anyone can beat it legit. It's not like I'm some noob either since I can beat all 16 stages in R-Type, breeze through Psychosis, and hell I'm the Air Zonk World Champion and yet this game is still annoyingly difficult.

Here is a video of me just trying to play it again but I don't get too far:

Good vid, starsoldier1!. Good thing I am not after the entire N.A. Turbo collection, because I would not look forward to this one coming in the mail.

I've beaten it "legit" and it's not that hard. R-Type is much worse.

I disagree wholeheartedly. You just haven't gotten the hang of it yet. Get used to the controls, beat the game, then tell us why it sucks.

In my opinion it is the worst shooter for the PCE/Turbografx-16.

Can you please make a video on this? I tried looking around on YT and Blip to see playthroughs but I haven't found any on this game. I wanna know what happens after it's beaten twice.

Rtype is hard but if you learn the pattern of the stages it's not too bad.

Believe me I tried, I really did. I have beaten it before but not without cheating because the enemies move too fast and you lose your speed power up once your hit. The full health icon rarely appears as well which annoys me. If anyone can I would love to see it?

Definitely, I still rather play Deep Blue over Magical Dinosaur Tour or Gunboat any day.

I might make a YouTube video someday, but as of now, I have no way to make YouTube videos.

One key to success is realizing the "other" way to restore health. That is, stop shooting. Your ship will heal itself while you're not shooting. There are stretches that are better if you just fly through and play the dodge game rather than shooting constantly. During these stretches you can recover health, even without the health power up.

Two reviews, one by me, the other by my brother IvaNEC to offset some of the bad press Deep Blue continues to endure.

Deep Blue still sucks?  Damn, I thought the bad programming and design might have healed themselves by now.

EDIT:  There are 16 stages in R-Type?  Did it grow new levels while I haven't been playing it?

I love Deep Blue.   It's mellow and the music is nice...

but, I love games involving underwater doom.

If the game played identically but was in space, I'd probably be like 'f*ck this game, kill it'

This game is what inspired some of the ideas for my Defender clone for the turbo. :)

[/quote]Those are some good reviews but it also create a problem when you stop shooting and try to regain lost health. The game stops being a shooter after that.

Well, once you finish the first 8 stages in Rtype the game loops over on a higher difficulty. It finally ends after 16 stages.

He mentioned the health regeneration strategy in his video.
