What games am I missing?
« on: October 18, 2010, 12:44:33 PM »
Well, I'm still a turbo n00b, so i thought I'd ask you guys what i need.
so far, in my pce/tg16 collection, i've got:
Castlevania Rondo of blood
Gotzendeiner
Monster Lair
Alien Crush
Dungeon Explorer
JJ and Jeff
Keith Courage
Genji Tsushin Agadema
Kunio's Soccer (screw typing the real one)
Ys I&II
Ys III

And I know I need to get:
Gate of Thunder (trying to get one now)
Lords of Thunder
Bonk 1,2,3
Splatterhouse
Kunio's Dodgeball
Devil's Crush
Shockman
Splash Lake
Blazing Lasers
Raiden
R-Type
New Adventure Island
the Wonder Boy remake (what the hell is the title?)

I'm open to imports, even getting an arcade card if need be.
what am I forgetting?
for now, I'm not looking to spend more than $20-30 on a single game.

I dont see Air Zonk (PC denjin?) on there, that's a good one :P

And what about Military Madness, Parasol Stars, and any of the Soldier series shooties (the PCE versions are really cheap, at least SSS and FS are)
[Sun 23:29] <Tatsujin> we have hard off, book off, house off, sports off, baby off, clothes off, jerk off, piss off etc

I would add:
Dead Moon
Exile
Bloody Wolf
Aero Blasters
Cyber Core
Buster Bros
Forgotten Worlds
Cosmic Fantasy 2
Bomberman
Galaga 90
Parasol Stars
Neutopia I & II (two can be found at a decent price if you look around)
Valis series  Valis IV and Fantasm Soldier are imports that can be found cheap

imports:
Bomberman 93 94
1943 Kai
Override
Fray Xak Gaidan
Macross 2036
Magicoal
Spriggan (you must own this game!)
Panic Bomber
Gradius II
Parodius Da!
Download
Download II
HellfireS
Psychic Storm
Ys IV (you can use Nightwolve's english patch for it, but it's nice to still own in your collection)

Most of these games are in the 20-30 dollar range you are wanting minus probably Spriggan which is from what I've seen in the $40-$50 range.  Quite a few of these can  be had for under $10.  Pretty much all the imports I mentioned are easily playable since most are shooters, but most don't really require knowledge of Japanese to play.

Spriggan was the first PCE game I ever owned, and it's nearly my favorite. Definitely my favorite shootie. I like to better than Sapphire even. :)

Image Fight!!! ($15-20)

And since you appear to be a Kunio fan, there are two more Kunio games for PCE Super-CD-ROM:
Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku Soreyuke Daiundoukai ($20-40) - a multi-event sports game
Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari ($80-120) - a.k.a. River City Ransom

Double Dragon 2 (JP SCD) for sure.
Bomberman '94 (JP HuCard or JP SCD)- my favorite one out of all the games next to maybe the Sega Saturn version.
Final Lap Twin (US HuCard) is also an awesome game in its own way.

Also, there is a certain charm to the PCE version of SF2 CE and it is really cheap.

If you have a couple of buddies that game with you, then I highly recommend Battle Lode Runner for the PCE. It has a multiplayer mode that is oodles of fun, especially with five players. The concept of the game is really simple as you have to dig holes for others to fall in. But you have lots of other cool power-ups at your disposal. It was a real blast organizing and taking part in the 5-player tournament matches that we did for Turbo Fest a couple of months back. The 1 player mode is not bad either.

SignofZeta: What a quintessentially PCEFX thread. Someone complains about nothing, multiple Bible-length posts discussing who's a bigger a$$hole follow. You're both pretty big a$$holes. Let's call it a tie.

New Adventure Island
the Wonder Boy remake (what the hell is the title?)

I believe you're talking about Dynastic Hero for the american release title.
I don't see it on your list, but if u got a few buddies who're down w/retro gaming (aren't we all?!?), gather them up to play Motoroader, u can get it for cheap too  It's kinda like Midway's Super Off-Road....but soooo much better!

New Adventure Island is "the Wonderboy remake." Same enemies/gameplay, different levels.

Bikkuriman World is the second Wonderboy, "Wonderboy in Monsterland."
Wonderboy III: Monster Lair is.... well, "Wonderboy III."
Dragon's Curse is "Wonderboy in The Dragon's Trap"
The Dynastic Hero is "Wonderboy in Monster World"

New Adventure Island is more a reboot/re-imagining of Adventure Island, the NES port of the very first Wonderboy. It shares the least in common with its Wonderboy counterpart of the five games, basically the only things that remain from the arcade original are the aforementioned enemies and gameplay elements as well as the classic fruit powerups. The level layouts themselves are completely different save for a stretch early in the first area.

Those last four are in most cases direct ports of the originals, except some changes in the boss characters in the 2nd and 5th game.

Lucky for you New Adventure Island is much cheaper than Dynastic Hero. I doubt I'll ever get DH due to its price. Plus I already have it on VC, along with Monster World on the Genny.

Beyond Shadowgate on the other hand?

Ahh, it gets more confusing.

Adventure Island on the PC Engine (the game you linked to) is the Japanese version of the American Dragon's Curse (direct port of Wonderboy in the Dragon's Trap).

Not to be confused with New Adventure Island which is as I stated in my previous message.

The short of it is: Adventure Island (Japan) = Dragon's Curse (American)

And just because I forgot to include them earlier, here's a couple reviews (by my Turbo brother and I) on the 2nd game, and one by my brother on the 3rd. We don't have one up for Dragon's Curse/Adventure Island as yet....

Why oh why did they have to name Dragon's Curse Adventure Island in Japan? That's just...mean. :(

y'know, the wonder boy games are great, but whoever decided on the numbering of the series should be shot.
