Didn't you say you had some extra monitors of some sort? You live in Cleveland, right?

Yeah I  live in Cleveland right near that CCAG place.  I have a 1084S-D1 and a 1080 monitor.  They're nice, but when you've got a Turbo-R, Amiga1200, SuperGrafx, and whoknows wtf else set up on this desk, its nice to have a flat panel to use.

This TV has a VGA port on it.  Would that board allow me to use the systems on it with the VGA port?  I am pretty retarded at this sort of thing.

Some Tubes do look like shit, my mom gave me her old 27" sylvan CRT and I was all pumped since I've been playing on a 20" Toshiba CRT. Brought it home, played with every setting and it still looks like crap so I'm back to my 20". I'd rather have a smaller screen with a nice picture than a large one that looks like a turd. Someday I will stumble on a 27-32" CRT with a nice picture and it will be mine.....

Well, yeah, not every CRT is good, obviously. That is why some 27" TVs cost $200, and the one I got the other day cost $1300. Since it was used I only paid $20 though, and boy does it RULE.

Here is a link to me talking about my crazy new monitor.

A pretty sure bet on CRTs from the 90s is Sony. You can get a great old Trinitron for $60 at a Salvation Army store.

Yeah, that's the whole purpose of the board. It will take almost any RGB signal (as well as component) and output them as 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768 VGA.

That doesn't necessarily mean it will look at that great though. I have a 19" Samsung LCD monitor that I tried with it and it looked like shit since VGA always looks like shit going into that thing, and at a non-native res...its terrible. When I hook my Macbook to it via DVI is terrific, but with analog sources its shite.

If you can turn off all scaling then it might look really nice though. I can't on this LCD of mine since its cheap shit. With a good display its probably pretty nice. The visual results on my 17" CRT are pretty good. It upscales way better than most TVs, but those used to "real" line doublers from Micomsoft (or better) won't be having it. It has some issues with fake flicker transparencies, but its not as bad as the shit built into most LCD TVs where one guy has a full black shadow and the other guy has none.

I am debating taking this TV back as I just got it yesterday, and putting the 1084 back on the desk.   Though, inevitably, it is going to die...so finding a modern solution is needed eventually.

I don't have any RGB mods on any of my consoles.  My MSX outputs RGB natively though.

Going from standard RCA composite doom into an XRGB, will that yield happy results, or no?

Also, I am thinking of buying this: SLG3000 Scanline Generator thing.... to use with the XRGB or something.

http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/  Has lots of information/comparisons point to getting an VP30 + Scanline generator, or the XRGB, if your goal is to play PCE stuff, or MSX. (And yes I am aware that MSX on the site is for Metal Slug X, and not the MSX computer!).

Would I need to RGB mod my SuperGrafx, or Duo-R to take full advantage of an XRGB or VP30 though?  Cause if so, f*ck it.   1084 time.  Composite on a 1084 looks good.  I am thinking about getting an RGB mod on my duo-r eventually.  Doesn't D-Lite do them? :)

I'm glad I started this thread. Half of you confuse the F out of me. But the rest of you are actually informing my dumb azz big time. Keep the info comin! Some of you say LCD looks bad compared to an old tube TV.

Three letters for you... J-V-C.

You might be laughing, but seriously. I have a JVC 30" CRT that we (my wife and I) got new in 2004. It's a flat-screen CRT, which I much prefer over the curved screens. The important thing, however, is that it displays just about the best (perfectly colored, crispest) picture I've ever seen on a CRT. The input selection pales in comparison to that one Zeta linked to, but it still offers 3x composite inputs, 1x component and 1x S-Video in addition to RF. I have to use two switchboxes (one for the composites and one for the S-Videos) for all the consoles I have hooked up to it, but in 30 years I've never seen a better picture on a CRT.

Also, FWIW, I have no bias to JVC or anything. Up until last year I owned a 1991 JVC set (same size, 30") that had a picture that couldn't touch the 2004 JVC with a 100-foot pole. The flyback transformer finally blew so I chucked it. On the other hand, I will push my electronics knowledge to the limits to keep the 2004 going forever.

EDIT: Here's the 2004 TV I'm talking about. The description is misleading, as the TV is not HD. It's just capable of receiving and "downscaling" HD video feeds and displaying them as SD.

XRGBs work best with RGB.  Using S-Vid and Composite through them aren't recommended unless you have no choice.
The SLG3000 is for VGA.  So you can pair one with an XRGB, but not really needed unless your are really anal about perfect scanlines, or have an XRGB-1 (no scanlines, but cheapest option).

but what about using that DVDO option, thats cheaper than an XRGB, with the scanline simulator?

This all sucks and seems like a lot of f*ckin work when I got a badass 1084S in the closet 5 feet from me.

Hey, that's the TV I moved out of the game room and into a bedroom to make room for this crazy new one I got. I think its more like 27", but it looks exactly like that and has most, if not all, of the same features. The picture is really good for sure, and I like the 16:9 enhanced capability. I wish my new one did that. Someday I want to get a squeeze Laserdisc and try that out, but I've used it a lot with DVDs. I don't know if mine has the 3D comb filter or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Going from standard RCA composite doom into an XRGB, will that yield happy results, or no?

well, happer, but RGB gives jaw droppingly awesome results. It will scale and deinterlace much better than almost any TV, but it will be not as good.

All XRGBs except for the 1 do this already, but it might team up really well with the $35 "HD converter" thing I linked to. I've wanted to try it but can't justify the cost. Combined they would still be a fraction of the cost of an XRGB.

The RGB mod is pretty minor in cost/complexity compared to the XRGB. I will be offering this service here soon. I have some more experimenting to do though.

As nice as the XRGBs are, they still aren't the same as a real 15khz monitor.  My 21'' VGA monitor with XRGB looks beautiful, but my 19'' cab's monitor wins every time.  Stop being lazy, mod your systems and use that RGB monitor of yours.  PCE RGB mods are stupid easy.

Thanks Nat, it does look pretty nice and I trust your opinion on these things. Now I just have to find a place to buy one.

It has nothing to do with lazy.  I'm not comfortable opening a Duo-R or supergrafx to poke at it with soldering irons.  I'll do it with a C64 because I don't care if I break those pieces of shit. :)

Someone else can do it for me maybe.   The big thing though is, the RGB monitor takes up too much room on the desk, hence the flat panel.

I want to find the best way to make a LCD tv look similar to the 1084.  Space is important.  Plus the 1084S will probably blow up soon.

SGX is an easy mod.  There is so much empty space it's hilarious.  70% of the PCB is totally devoid of
traces.  It could easily have been the size of a normal PCE I'd bet.  Plus you can use the expansion port,
which is really easy, and very hard to mess up. :)  You could always just buy a junk Ten no koe 2 and mod
it, you can do the mod on both ends of the port.

an RGB modded supagrafx would be legit, since I got the CD doodadder and what not.

Whats this about using the expansion port now?

The one on the front, or the one on the back?

Wtfs the one on the front even do?

I took that TV back and hooked the 1084 up with composite.  Looks sexy.

The one on the back.  Just have to solder wires to the correct pins.  Don't need to use the chip
like on a Duo.  I think the front port was for the Power Console, but nobody really knows.

So I could actually make a ghetto connector instead of soldering to the pins? step 1, buy a tennokoe or some jive

step 2, hack that bastard up?

but then what if I want to use the RAU-30 and stuff to CD-ROM it up.
