NEC in 2011 is still failing
« on: January 08, 2011, 07:18:05 PM »
Some info here http://news.google.com/news/more?pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&cf=all&ncl=dDyB2FDUGXFwQ7MRoYIcoD58Ns-VM
...about 2011 ConsumerElectronicShow and NEC has a new dual screen tablet. Though it will most likely never have a NEC logo on it anyway since they outsource a company name. It seems like NEC is still failing. #-o ](*,)

I know it's not a gaming topic but it's good for us to see where this company (NEC) has evolved into since the Turbografx16 and PC-engine days. Please don't delete this topic for being a non-gaming topic. If you are a NEC fan than check out the link and share opinions here. Did NEC fail....again? :?:

NEC's role in the PC Engine was essentially to build the thing for Hudson, who had mostly designed it by that point. They both made umpteen millions off of it.

The TG-16 was a failure, as was the PC-FX.

Regardless of all of this stuff NEC has raked in trillions of yen from giant boring-ass beige office copy machines and PCs. Its actually a super successful company overall.

This dual tablet thing...yeah, its lame as shit, but so is everyone else's iPad knock-off. I'm not yet convinced that there is any room for something besides the iPad and the Kindle, I can't figure out why all these PC companies are fighting over scraps like this.

Zeta is right, Nec is for sure a successful company. They have for years now developed and licensed their products to be sold under another name. In a way it's sad, but it's probably the smart move to keep the company making money and not going out of business.

Here is a video of the NEC decice. !

A couple things I like about it are the fact that it reads like a book or magazine and when closed the screen is protected. Also, if they have one screen like a touch-screen keyboard then you could open it 90degrees like a laptop/notebook on a table and type on one screen while the other screen displays.
It kinda reminds me of a HUGE nintendo DS.

I always liked what NEC does. I don't mean to bash on them. I LOVE the duo. But I wonder why everyone didn't love the tg16/DUO. The problem seems more like a marketing problem instead of a device problem. Which I assume is happening to this Dual screen tablet. Once a company gets a reputation it is kinda hard to change that.
Long live NEC no matter what they make!

NEC doesn't have a reputation. Nobody even knows WTF they do, yet they make money.

NEC's reputation in the US comes from professional displays, digital cinema, communication equipment, and similar commercial equipment; the success or failure of this 'toy' will have essentially zero effect on their bottom line.

P.S. - this has nothing to do with the TG-16 and belongs in chit-chat.

Where exactly is the chit-chat section? I didn't want to put it in the non-NEC sections but at the same time I knew it wasn't NEC gaming. I thought NEC fans would appreciate the info though. Maybe the topic doesn't belong on this website at all....LOL.
Feel free to move the topic.

Where exactly is the chit-chat section?

It's towards the bottom of the front page, under "Non-NEC Console Related Discussion".

I actually think that producy is pretty cool.  Displays 2 pages at a time, folds up, nice!!   Would I want an I pad first???... prolly.  Does this make nec a bad company for doing this no.  I love nec.  I do Commercial a/v and they make really great stuff.

I really agree with Zeta on alot of his points.

And thanx game freak for putting this up. :)

I'll always have goodwill towards NEC because they gave us the PC Engine so everytime I see the NEC logo on a cash register or a computer monitor it would always bring a smile to my face :)

Still failing? Wha? Has NEC, at any time, ever, actually been "failing?"

The PC-FX was the closest thing they had to a failure, and still it was a minor success that made them money for nearly five years, it just didn't do well when compared sales-to-sales with the Saturn and Playstation. The only people that lost anything on the FX were the people who bought one hoping for lots of great arcade ports and shooters.

The PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 was a monumental success that didn't do well in one particular market (they still made a shitload of dough, regardless, because of its success in Japan).

All that said, NEC has its hands in so many home electronics, computers, and appliances something like the TG-16 (talking US only here) or PC-FX is about as important to them as selling snowblowers is for Honda.

NEC used to put out some pretty sweet displays -- They were one of the few companies that had a nice flat-screen CRT monitor way, way back in the days.  I had one myself.

Yeah, mid-90s NEC Multisync's were the best. They were reliable, had a nice picture, would would sync 15kHz.
