Keith Courage is a fine, if unremarkable, game. I think the problem is that it doesn't really feel like a pack-in. In Japan it was a licensed title. Here it was just a weird platformer. So while there's nothing wrong with it as a game, I think the Turbo might have been better served by some other title as a pack-in, just in terms of general, over-all appeal.
Legendary axe, Blazing Lazers, Fantasy zone, vigilante? So many good first year releases that could have been great pack-in games. I total agree its not terrible just not orgasmic like some members seem to think

I always had fun with Double Dungeons playing 2 player mode back in the day.  Thought the scrolling 3D corridors looked great too.
Word.  Cruised through level 1 with my brother just last week.

I'll go ahead and nominate Order of the Griffon as an under-appreciated game.
Nothing like charming an enemy mage and watching him fireball his companions!

Totally agree, I'm actually playing through the game right now for the first time in my life. I'm about halfway through so far. I kept pushing it aside because I thought it looked pretty drab from screenshots, but it's actually one of the most addicting dungeon crawlers on the face of the planet. The neverending enemy cast never ceases to amaze, either. Not to mention it has THE BEST narrative ever "penned" for a video game.

"THE WARRIOR ENCOUNTERED A SOAKING MAN SO HE ENTERED THE DUNGEON."

Brilliant.

Double Dungeons succeeded at taking the dungeon crawl and making it have an arcade feel.

If that game was a coinop, it'd be just as frigging good.

Wow. You guys have just breathed new hope into Double Dungeons for me. I had completely written it off by the horrible reviews and word of mouth. I think it's the Happy Console Gamer's most hated TG game. lol.

I have no idea who is writing those awful reviews, but in reality, the game doesn't do anything wrong. The only thing I can think of that I might change is the look of the dungeons. As it is, all the dungeons look identical except for layout. Still, this is a minor point as it does everything else so well. As has been mentioned already, the scrolling is super-smooth. The gameplay is lightning fast; you traverse virtual miles of corridor in seconds and the battles play out incredibly fast.

I actually agree with this. The music is really good, too.

Is this the same game where the player would encounter generic "slime monsters" over and over???

Yeah.

But really the game is great.  I like the fast pace.  I play alot of first person dungeon crawlers.... and one thing I know for a fact is I usually hate them when they're on a console due to lack of mouse and keyboard.    There are exceptions to the rule, but usually (Eye of the Beholder), the stuff sucks.

This, paces the game quickly, its arcadey since you find shops and shit.  Its just awesome.   The should have changed the dungeon themes for sure as you progress but its a minor setback to an awesome game

Ha! Apparently, I should have quoted my entire post from yesteryear (not just the part about Order of the Griffon).

Double Dungeons -- This will never be on anyone's "Best List", but if you are into old-skool dungeon crawling (occasionally making maps), then you might try this. This game would have been a lot better had there been a greater variety of environments and enemies (among other things). The reason I suggest this game is because the TWO PLAYER CO-OP mode is actually a lot of fun (both players have to enjoy the game, of course). Unfortunately, I don't know how likely it is to find two folks who enjoy this game enough to finish it. My brother and I are probably in the minority Smile (and that was 16 years ago).

Anyway, I still feel that a greater variety of environments + enemies would have helped this game tremendously.

I agree with nat: some really nice tunes in DD (too bad there weren't more!).

Since I'm being lazy, and just quoting myself, I might as well remind you folks about this AWESOMENESS (since no one has mentioned it yet):

The koolest thing is that the ONLY way to see yourself is to have a second player and manuevre (sp?????) yourselves to look at one another. Unless there is a mirror I'm forgetting about, that's the only way to see what your character looks like!

Yet ONE MORE REASON for you to play Double Dungeons as 2-player co-op!

In what RPG/dungeon crawler do you NOT encounter "slimes?"

There are shit ton of enemies in the game, the slimes usually only inhabit the very beginning of each dungeon.

My concern was that "slimes" were the dominant enemy type throughout the game. Most reviews I have read seem to state this. Looks like I need to give her a shot. :)

This just reinforces my theory that most people who review the game haven't actually played it. In some of the larger dungeons you can go 30 minutes (or more) without encountering a single slime.

On the other hand, if you mess around in the beginning of a dungeon for 5 minutes, it's likely the only creatures you will encounter are slimes.
