Still, if they wanted to do simply an art exhibit of video games they shouldn't have grouped it chronologically, by era. By grouping it as such, it gives a more of historical feel, when, according to the curator, it is not. I think it's totally misleading.

And anyone who sees the introduction of the CD medium on console systems as only a footnote in video gaming needs to have their head examined. It completely changed how games would be developed and contributed fully to the video game as an art form.

Precisely.  Its use of the CD allowed for voices, animation, cut scenes, and music the likes of which were rarely seen before and certainly not in such quantities; if that isn't advancing video game art with 'striking visuals, creative use of new technology, and influential artists and designers', then I don't know what is.  Even worse is their complete omission of arcade games; early on you went to the arcade to see cutting edge artwork and stayed at home for watered down ports and imitations, yet arcades apparently don't even merit a mention.  Now I understand not having room for everything, yet they found room for the Wii and the GameCube, neither of which are pushing the art envelope at all (Boom Blox, really?!?).

Plus, their selection of games is suspect.  Why include console ports of PC games (Dune, Command and Conquer, and Sim City), and are they really saying that console ports of arcade games were influencing anything?   f*ck 'em!  I refuse to vote on grounds that it's little more than a exhibit of "games that people really liked playing at home" - artwork be damned.

Ah yes, NUON, LaserActive, 32X, Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar, and 3DO all deserve their spots in the hall of fame :)

I agree!  Why dont they have ys bk 1&2.  for me that game was art.  when that came out in the us market as a kid  there was nothing like it.  it blew me and everyone away. How could someone just pass it up.

I just read  World of Warcraft get its own playable kiosk.  Well now we know the thing is being sponsered.............the whole thing is a sham.  what a shame

Is Ultima Online mentioned at all?

If not, I think what they are really doing is making a hipster gaming museum.

HEY BRO, BRING YOUR MACBOOK DOWN TO THE ATRIUM AND PLAY SOME WOW BRO, YEAH.

Nevermind that UO pioneered the online RPG concept, created a pretty intricate virtual world, and has been going strong since 1998.  That don't matter, CAUSE MR. T PLAYS WOW.

If the Turbo/PCE doesn't warrant inclusion due to low sales and being but an asterisk in history, then please explain why the Saturn, Dreamcast, Intellivision, and ColecoVision were included.

Yes, an "asshair" sums up its legacy nicely.

And you are correct--he should have fought for the Turbo, especially because it has more "popularity" now (via the recycling of video games on Virtual Console, XBOX, PSN, mobile devices, etc.) than the ColecoVision & Intellivision combined.

I believe the Saturn and Dreamcast, though, were far more popular (in their era), than the TG-16, though I could be wrong.

Anyway...

Only if you restrict your view to the US; if you measure popularity by worldwide system sales, then the PCE/Turbob beats 'em both by a hair.

CMilissinos that heads this whole thing is answering questions asked at their page.  He keeps mentioning this damn narrative for the exhibit, but doesn't really go into what it is.  I noticed a couple of your guys comments and it's sad he didn't include the Turbo and it's obviously (like others have said) not truely one of his favorites, cause it would've made the cut.  Not having a machine that started the whole CD for game medium is asinine.  I would gladly donate my TG-16 and add on to the Smithsonian to have it put in the exhibit.  I really do not get what narrative they're going for.

Yeah geise,  I have no idea what theu are going for either..  if its all about the art of video games .  Why limit it to 20 consoles?  If it was all about the art it would just be about the game from each era. What does a console have to do with art?  IMO they are doing for a popularity contest.  All they did was take the most popular systems and let people vote on it.  How sad is that?

Well I do understand where they are coming from.  They have limited space for the exhibit, and are only using US titles.  Also, they want to keep the more well known games so they can appeal to the broader audience.  That's what I gathered from the ramblings on the comment site.  I do have to give them credit for trying something like this though.  It's definitely not an easy task.  However, some games or systems not being entered is kind of baffling.  The Turbo is one point and not cause it's my favorite system.  Quite a few games like f*cking CoD are in there twice, but not once did they ever mention Castlevania.  If they have limited space and only 240 games why use the same game twice.  Yeah none of those CV games have any artistic merit.  Plus it's not like CV was ever on the NES, Genesis, SNES, PS1, N64,  #-o (forget those two) PS2.  At least I saw they had Grandia 1 PS1 and Panzer Dragoon Saga.  So I give them a little bit of credit.  I hope they have other facts certain games though, like Grandia for being on Saturn first and actually running better.  Also they have Lunar SSS for PS1, and never have any mention on the Sega CD version.  I have no idea wtf they are trying to show in this exhibit.
