Shall I bother finishing Cosmic Fantasy 2?
« on: February 22, 2011, 08:02:51 AM »
Convince me it's worth it...I'm getting so very bored of the constant battles and grind...is there something great to look forward to in the later parts of the game or should I not bother?

it gets easier as you move forward.  The Grind never ends, but the storyline is totally worth it!  Very memorable.  With some added polish, this game could have been one of the best ever.

Just level up like crazy and grind away- the rewards are great!

It's a grind, but it's worth playing through to the end.  Besides, after suffering through Rastan Saga II this should be a cake walk.

I'm scared to admit it, but I might even prefer the cruddyness of Rastan Saga II to hours of unending grind sending me to sleep.

Maybe if I play a little each day it will be easier. I don't know what's happened, I used to be all for JRPGs, but in recent years I've just lost interest because of the never ending grind which is just a pointless time sink in many cases.

I feel the same way about Dragon Slayer.

Dragon Slayer is one of the few I really don't mind at all. I think it's because at some point you can actually see the monsters wandering around and choose when to fight them. And the combat music is great.

Not only that, but, you can do auto battle in DS, making the grind even easier!  And hell, if you play it on an emulator....you can auto battle weaker enemies while speeding up the emulation if you like!  However, both games are a blast for me, & CF2 was my very first RPG, I had never played one before, but, I liked the look of the cinemas I saw in EGM, so I bought it on day 1.  The story is worth it IMO.  I'd say more, but, don't want to spoil anything.

I'd like to finish CF2 someday, but I lost my save file twice and don't have the heart to slog through the first two thirds again.  (Once in '97 due to running a Tennokoe Bank through a bad Barney Converter.  Once in '04 from not turning on my system for three months.)

Are there complete dungeon maps posted anywhere?  I might attempt it again if I know I can get through it without taking one. single. extra. monster-encountering. step.

I've beaten Dragon Slayer probably 5-6 times total. Very easy game, not a lot of grinding once you get going in comparison for traditional JRPGs. And it's rather short. I've only beaten CF2 once, BITD when it was new. I could never bring myself to complete it again. Ever since it felt like work, not like fun.

there are tits.

Censored in the US version, get your save there in the English one...... AND THEN LOAD THE JAPANESE DISC. REJOICE AT THE BOOBIES.

The game is awesome.  Its only flaw is the random battle rate is more like, 1 in 3 steps, or something idiotic.

Do what I did the one time, I just "played" the game while doing other things.  By play I mean, I taped the turbob button down on a turbo stick, and moved the joystick with my foot and then just let the battle play out.  If you do it in an area where the enemies have little chance of winning, you'll gain levels before you know it! ^_^

Sorry, but you're wrong about this.  The shower scene is exactly the same in the Japanese version of Cosmic Fantasy 2.  It was "altered" for the Cosmic Fantasy Visual Collection.

Check here for shower scene screen comparisons:

And here's a lot of info on how the US and JPN versions of CF2 compare:

It's a Japanese FAQ site, but it has all the maps:
http://rko.jp/cosmic_fantasy_2-bouken_shounen_ban/index.html

The links under the 攻略 section, (broken down by chapters) are where all the dungeon maps are located.  The items found in the dungeons are obviously written all in Japanese as well, so unless you can read Japanese, you'll have to figure some of those out by trial and error (before long, you'll recognize the commonly repeated items, like herbs and whatnot).

The encounter rate in CF2 is like this:

random(30) + 5

but the seed seems to be broken as it often generates the same value three or four times in a row. There are quite a few bugs in CF2 and this is one of them.

And afaik, the only thing that was censored from the Japan version to the US version is Babette flipping off Robert while telling him that she's gonna turn him in for a complete overhaul for ratting her out.

It probably won't do you much good, because you need to grind to level up.

That's actually quite handy. Once I feel I have levelled enough, I like to head straight for where I need to go, without loas of frustrating wrong turns wasting my herbs.
