Without cheating, I've beaten Exile Wicked Phenomenom, that's games a @#$*%$@.  But, I had my tricks, involving ALL of the characters!  I don't care what other people say, they ALL came in handy!!  Including Fahkyle!  Other then that, using save states I've beaten the Rayxanber's & Image Fight 2 & Super Raiden & Legendary Axe's, etc.  But, like I said, that's with save states.

Probably a tie between Air Zonk and Blazing Lazers. Final stages in both games are stupid hard!

At least you're man enough to admit it.  I've used 'em too, for those games that I've given up on beating legitimately.

Using save states is for chumps :)

Of course, I've almost thrown my PCE into the wall during particularly frustrating sessions, so I don't know if I'm better off.

When it came out I beat Air Zonk I played it night and day until I've beaten it
I also beaten Eternal City not a hard game as such but very big gameworld so it took for ever to finish.
When I bought my Turbo in 91/92 I also bought a bunch of games Bonk's adv. and Revenge amongst others and beaten both and now comes the funny thing! I tried Bonks adv. about a month ago and could'nt even beat the first boss ....LOL
Have'nt been playing as much as I should on my NEC'ers, been rebuilding the house, gotten my self a new car, risking loosing my job, and playing WOW taking out my frustration on the keyboard instead of breaking a NEC'er (lol)
I will repent though soon when the new play room is available in the house... :D

This might sound odd but.....I honestly think the end of Buster Bros. is prety abyssmal. And not talking about the time limit heavy last level, but the first level of the space part of the game. 50 plus levels in and the thing starts you out in a near death trap.

It would have been alot easier if you could keep the weapons you pick up until you die and not reset to default at the begining of the next level.

Maerchen Maze also gave me a hell of a time thanks to the perspective.

And Jim Power in Mutant Planet was a bitch to beat because of the unfair hit detection (a spike would kill you even while standing several feet away from it)

But of course all this pales into insignificance before the horror that is

Actually, that's not crazy at all. It's challenging for me to beat Buster Bros., especially because I get stressed out and choke over stupid things, wasting precious lives on dumb crap that I should have avoided.

I have not spent much time playing Jim Power (on any platform! And I have SNES and PCE versions), but it certainly smacked me around and spat in my general direction. I have to beat that goddamn game, if only to redeem myself.

The weird thong is that I like the soundtrack (PCE).

------------- CONTINUING TOPIC ----------------

I felt quit pleased when I beat JJ & Jeff, it's not the hardest game, but last few parts are totally challenging. One momentary lapse and you are screwed. No cheats or continues. Word up, mothers.

Wonderboy III: Monster Lair was another tough mother to beat, but I had a great time doing it. I still love that game. No cheats or continues, of course.

I couldn't get through Kato and Ken , because there's one point where I just keep getting warped backwards in the game.

I beat Monster Lair the other day and it kind of got on my nerves a bit, because it is a tad repetitive. Also Chris Bucci's review mentioning the amount of stages made me think it's gonna take me forever, but it surprised me with ending sooner then expected.

Disclaimer : Instead of cleaning the backyard, I am here. Forgive the longish post (how ironic).

I couldn't get through Kato and Ken , because there's one point where I just keep getting warped backwards in the game.

Like many games of a bygone era, Monster Lair is "on the long side", but that is a complaint that can be leveled at countless games, so it is hardly damning. Monster Lair's awesome (IMHO) soundtrack and excellent execution (I feel that the mechanics, controls, stage design, etc. are well-polished) make playing and re-playing the stages (even the earlier, familiar ones) a pleasant experience. Stage 3 is one of my favorites in the game, despite being such an early level, because you can race through with a wonderful fluidity (yes, you have to destroy all the huge boulders to be a true master).

General advice to avoid tedium: To keep things entertaining, I suggest folks adopt my "Grab every single power-up and fruit philosophy". True, you won't use any given weapon for more than a second. You won't have more than a few moments to relax, since you're constantly taking care of business. Plus, it forces you become comfortable with all of the weapons. Even on bosses (except for a few that still scare me), I'll go into battle with any weapon. It keeps you on your toes, especially if they are short range or very weak.

The mini-stage (flying dragon shoot-em-up) prior to the bosses could have been shorter, but, hey, it's only a minute, IIRC, so it's really not that bad. But I understand that folks find this segment a bit tedious...

I still can't remember all the crazy warps and secrets in Kato & Ken. Re-visiting games is somewhat frustrating, because I have to re-discover so much crap: I feel like an old fogie who's going senile. To put a positive spin on things: at least this senility allows me to get more enjoyment out of the game. I suppose I'd be bored by half the games I play if I remembered everything. Thankfully, I haven't seen a deterioration in my motor skills :)

Bottom line: SENILITY improves REPLAY VALUE. Truth.

ON CHANGING PERSPECTIVES: I re-gained an appreciation for JJ & Jeff over the years; I like it far more now than I did in 1990 (when I thought it was somewhat lackluster and decidedly NOT "next-generation" caliber).

Well I do collect most everything in a stage, so that's not the problem :P

Mostly the fact that the end of a stage is always the same.

Oh and I want to add Hani in the Sky as the hardest PC engine game beaten by my to date (but not in the way Tatsujin sugests :P)

The toughest PCE games I've cleared so far are :

-Aldynes
-Nexzr (only twice or 3 times)
-Violent Soldier (which might not be that hard if I tried again)

But I think the most difficult game I've cleared was Daimkaimura (second loop, I mean). It was back in 1995.

Pomping World gets quite tricky at the end but it's not that difficult. As it was my very first CD game, I had no choice but spend a lot of time playing it so maybe that's why I feel like it's not that hard.

Jim Power is not that hard either.
